Just replaced mine, took couple minutes.
Here is a quick instruction from the owners manual. Note that The “UP” marks shown on the filter should be pointing up. https://drivers.lexus.com/t3Portal/d...tioning.filter
It is interesting that owner's manual states arrow up for filter as airflow is actually from top down. UP appears to just mean the orientation of the plastic cover that encloses the air filer.
Filters I have used have also stated airflow direction so my arrow is down.
I would think that owners manual is the right answer, as engineers at lexus would know better how to place the filter. When I replaced mine, the old one was pointing up, and I didn’t notice any issues.
maybe the arrow on the filter doesn’t literally mean how airflow passes through, but instead just shows how the filter should be inserted, at least for OEM one, which would mean to insert it with arrow up. I hope all other third party air filter manufacturers follow same logic lol
Ok, now it makes more sense. The OEM part has “⬆️UP”, which means the upper side of filter and therefore should be inserted that way (pointing up). That’s also what the owners manual directs.
Third party filters have “⬇️ Air Flow ⬇️“, meaning that’s how the airflow should pass through, therefore should be inserted with airflow pointing down, as air comes from the top to bottom.
so double check which filter you have and what signage you have on it and insert it correctly.

Thanks for summing up.
Noobs question: So in the GX (or any car for that matter), is the air flow always downward?
The OEM cabin filter has a paper element ... very easy for mice to enter the ventilation system and chew thru the paper element for access into the heater box where they nest ... especially in the wintertime. Do yourself a favor and purchase a K&N reusable (cleanable) cabin filter ... like all K&N filters, has a cotton gauze filter element sandwiched between heavy wire mesh that mice cannot chew thru for access into the cabin. Well worth the price for all reasons.
