Do you guys recommend changing out the shocks even though mine are fine with 40K on them?

... only you can answer that question. If the shocks are leaking and need replacement, the answer is easy ... if they are not leaking, then you need to decide if you are happy with the dynamics of the existing shocks. My answer was to replace the stock shocks ASAP given I did not like the "lazy" response ... way too soft, floaty and sometimes harsh ... an absolute mess of opposing dynamics in terms of "accomplishment". I wanted something more balanced, controlled, responsive and athletic (not harsh) in terms of road response.

IMO, the only significant improvement in comfort would be with an air suspension and even then it is questionable how much you can gain due to the overall design.

Toytec does not list any Bilstein's for the GX 460 and only 5100's for the 4 Runner

Call them ... have a conversation ... they are very experienced with installations ... they are not a "parts catalog" company ... they know what works on all Toyota / Lexus body-on-frame platforms.

Air Bags or Springs ... both perform the same function ... both have a "Spring Rate" ... no difference, other than an air based system is adjustable.

For the 4600's, this is the PN that fits the GX rear suspension: 24-187558.

Have you put these on your GX? My wife’s has the air suspension but mine does not... I tow but not much, have a 20 foot center console and don’t like it when I see trucks with the rear squatted down. I’d like to elevate my GX an inch or two and add these before summer.

The base model shock absorbers are way too stiff for my taste. Especially on bumpy/gravel road. Especially rear ones. Beefier tires did not help much.

If I'm not planning to do a lift, what options do I have? Maybe TRD PRO FOX shocks from tacoma? Maybe some aftermarket gas adjustable shocks?
Is there any resource that might have a list of parts?

Call metaltech 4x4 or slee offroad and talk to the professionals.... not willing to lift it, even slightly, limits your aftermarket options.

One thing to consider... your stock suspension may be "stiff" because it's totally collapsed and providing no dampening at all. Are you sure it's actually functioning and not riding on the bumpstops? you should be able to push down on a corner and have it come back up and jiggle to a settle position

The car only has 14k miles on odometer, this is not an air suspension and the rear end stands pretty high, how can it be collapsed? And it does not bounce back and force at all, it seems like shocks are optimized for a max control on the highway with the trailer attached (i e very stiff), but when you get to the country road, shocks refuse to absorb road imperfections, especially rear ones since the rear of the car is lighter and it gets translated directly to the behinds of my female passengers who then become unwilling to participate into this exciting activity anymore. I read on the forums that good aftermarket shocks even better than OEM adjustable shocks on all settings (i e they absorb bumps better than on "soft" position while they have better control then "sport" position), but when i go to the OAM/Bilstein/FOX websited i cannot find much options there, or even cannot find lexus GX there at all. I also dont know how much springs contribute to it rather than shocks. since (unlike air suspension) springs always have highest rating, maybe springs are just too hard for unloaded rear end and shocks are not going to help much?.... So looking for someone who walked this road already and got negative or positive results.

From GXOR FB page, looks like shocks for 4runner 5th gen would fit.
Also other mentioned FOX shocks also fit as well as KYB. FOX is of course at least 2x the price

4runner is much lighter car so I doubt 4runner shocks will be ok. Tundra is closer to GX by weight but probably has different geometry.

For KYB shocks - isn't it just a replacement OEM shock? I e its the same?
