adding MTS module during airbag recall
I have a 2014 GX that is subject to the passenger side airbag recall. I spoke to the Service Adviser today at my dealership to schedule the work and he noted that the technicians usually remove the entire glovebox and replace the airbag working up from under the glovebox. During this process, they would likely have direct access to the module utilized for adding MTS (Multi Terrain Select) to the GX using part# 859A1-60040 (for 2014+). Depending on your relationship with the adviser or whether or not you buy the part from that dealership or supply it yourself, you may be able to have the tech swap out the module. Because there is no programming required after the module swap, it's literally plug and play and shouldn't require any additional labor time.

Let us know what your dealer decides to do with your MTS module. It's only 30 minutes of work for you so it isn't that big of a deal to install.

I was thinking the same thing. Unless you're really close with the tech or service manager otherwise they probably won't do it. I think The MTS module swap out is much easier than the Crawl Control unit replacement - I didn't loose a bolt when I did this but lost a screw when I did the CC hahah LOL.
My initial gut feeling says that's going to be a no go. The dealer would have to be responsible for any issues surrounding that change. It's not a factory option in the US. I can maybe see them doing it if you sign a waiver form.

I saw a post here or maybe GXOR that they had a dealer do both crawl and MTS but I think it was a post warranty rig so at that point I could see them not worrying about it. I agree likely with others responses above.

Very much unlikely dealer will do that. There is huge liability issue involved. If in an accident and that was due to break related issue, by dealer adding a non-US spec and unapproved modification to the car, insurance company could walk a way for the claim and dealer will have to take the entire responsibilities.

Today I replaced the 859A1-60031 with a 859A1-60040 in our 2017 (it already came equipped with CC). We have yet to actually use it but my wife tested the MUD & SAND mode down the street and she immediately noticed a heavier feel.

Does it matter to use any of these features on hard tarmac?
I know as a long time four wheeler that you never run fully locked on pavement.
Does that apply to any of the Down Hill Assist/Crawl Control/Multi-Terrain??

You can run Mud & Sand mode in MTS in normal 4H mode. I use it in the snow at times. You just have to engage under like 7 MPH but beyond that will work at any speed.
I love that you can run the GX in 4L with an unlocked center diff. Never had a vehicle I could run 4L on pavement before.

MTS for snow and ice driving
My 2014 GX does not have MTS or Crawl. I do not go off-road/wheeling, but winter driving here can be worse. I am wondering if adding MTS will make driving on snow and ice any better?
I'd like to hear first-hand experiences from members who used MTS on snow or ice. Does it make a difference or not and if you think it is worth installing for winter driving.
Cheers,

You already have one of the best snow/adverse weather vehicles made in the world!
The all-wheel-drive system is designed to compensate for traction on these vehicles.
Mult-terrain, craw control, down hill assist are all for slow (read: <20 mph) driving.
If you live up in a location that gets that kind of weather and you've been their a while, you should already have earned your merit badge for bad weather driving.
Just keep it slow, a lite touch on the throttle and brake and be sensitive to how the steering wheel feels.
I really don't think multi-terrain would be of any use unless you get stuck or doing slow crawling through difficult terrain.
Now, for my qualifier: Albeit, I do live in sunny southern California, BUT I do quite a bit of off-roading with my GX. You can see some pic's of my rig on this site (https://www.clublexus.com/forums/gx-...l#post10422488 )

Let me qualify that I live in So. Cal. so that may be a limitation in itself.
The best I could find was a 2013 with Premium with 38,000 miles on the clock. Purchased this mid 2018.
The Premium I purchased did have Parking Assist and DAC, headlight washer, 3 climate zones, etc. but not some of the features I was really looking for such as:
- Multi-terrain
- Crawl Control
- Front radar
- Front and right side cameras

Thanks and I agree with you, It is probably a "nice-to-have" on snow and ice but not necessarily a "must-have"
I have been driving in the harshest of winters for 20+ years, so quite familiar with the process. 11 yrs of those I was driving my 80 series Land Cruiser. A real BEAST in snow and ice.
But, that said, I found that the most important item to have is a good set of winter tires (NOT all season, or all weather). Makes a difference of night and day in accelerating, braking and cornering.
But, because of the ease of installation, and somewhat reasonable price, I may just install the MTS module, which MAY come in handy one day.
