A. Crawl Control can be successfully added to a 2016 base model, & B. It has been added successfully to my 2016 (as well as the Multi Terrain)
It was updated using techstream, and I can't emphasize enough how important it is to "Have it in 4-low, park, and to hit the crawl on off switch before clicking the final exit on the ABS test"...It will NOT work otherwise.
The techs I took it too were stumped until I showed them the post on this forum, as this is brand new install, the computer "handshake" is vital as opposed to a vehicle that already had this installed and just needed a "Calibration".

Yes in deed...Bothell Toyota Specialists. You know when you go to get your Mercedes worked on it's nice to see Germans doing the work, Well this place is all Asian (I hope its OK to say that in this BS PC world we live in today?)
So anyone in the Seattle are needing work in general, I highly recommend these guys.
I recently added both MTS and Crawl to my 2012 GX 460 Premium, used the two wire init. method with a switch, and it worked the first try.
After spending some time out testing the installation, I discovered something that might be useful to pass along concerning installations with both MTS and Crawl. It appears that when you install MTS, A-TRAC slaves to MTS (discussed in the owner's manual). This means that if MTS is off then A-TRAC is also off. When I turned on Crawl with MTS off, Crawl seemed to work OK, but the info panel alternately flashed the Crawl menu with a warning TRAC OFF message. However, when I turned MTS on FIRST by selecting the desired surface, and THEN turned Crawl on the TRAC OFF warning vanished, both the MTS and Crawl lights were ON and everything operated like described in the owner's manual. It appears that to get Crawl to operate properly in a dual MTS and Crawl installation one needs to have MTS active BEFORE turning on Crawl (nothing but the Crawl speed can be changed when Crawl is active).
This is what I found in the 2012 owner's manual concerning MTS.
It appeared to me to indicate that MTS might dominate.
At least it appears to explain what I observed.

■When the four-wheel drive control switch is in L4 position
If the Multi-terrain Select system is not operating and the four-wheel drive control
switch is in L4, TRAC OFF will be shown on the multi-information display
"VSC (Vehicle Stability Control) is solely responsible for maintaining vehicle stability. It will accomplish this by cutting engine power as well as applying brakes to individual wheels as it sees fit. It is important to note the difference between stability and traction here. VSC is more concerned about the truck sliding out of control. It is not concerned with a wheel losing traction while crawling through a trail. VSC will kick in for things like swerving for a deer in the road or sliding from a patch of black ice. A yaw sensor and possibly other sensors are utilized to determine if the truck has lost stability.
TRAC (Traction Control) is solely responsible for maintaining traction. Making sure that none of the wheels are needlessly spinning because they have lost traction. It accomplishes this by applying brakes to individual wheels as it sees fit. TRAC will kick in anytime it detects wheels rotating at significantly different speeds – such as starting in icy conditions, driving through mud or snow and lifting a tire while offroading.
A-TRAC (Active Traction Control) is a 4Lo only mode that does the same thing as TRAC but turned up a few notches. Also, A-TRAC will not cut engine power. A-TRAC provides near locker like performance in that it allows very little speed difference between wheels.
MTS (Multi-Terrain Select) is a 4Lo only mode that does the same thing as A-TRAC but the amount of slip allowed can be adjusted via the various modes." <------ This isn't true on 460 as you can also run Mud/Sand in 4H if desired / 2020 appears to remove this MTS option of 4H
The following is found on page 336 of the 2012 owner's manual:
■TRAC (Traction Control) for H4 mode
Helps to maintain drive power and prevent the drive wheels from spinning
when starting the vehicle or accelerating on slippery roads
■Active TRAC (Traction Control) for L4 mode*
Helps to maintain drive power and prevent the 4 wheels from spinning
when starting the vehicle or accelerating on slippery roads, or in off-road
conditions
■Hill-start assist control
Helps to prevent the vehicle from rolling backward when starting on an
incline or slippery slope
■KDSS (Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System)
KDSS helps to enhance ride comfort and handling response by using a
hydraulic control system to control the suspension stabilizer bars in
response to road surface and driving conditions during cornering or offroad
driving *: The function only works in vehicles with Multi-terrain Select when Multi-terrain
Select is switched on
This appears to confirm my observations of how Crawl and MTS are related on the 2012 GX 460.
Apparent result: If MTS is OFF then Active TRAC is also OFF.
Only time ATRAC is not enabled in 4L on mine is if I manually disable it via the VSC button.
EDIT: I will have to test mine again some since I can't remember the last time I didn't utilize MTS in 4L mode. I don't recollect that behavior but I see what owner's manual says.
Hello everyone. I just leased a 2019 GX460 premium. I'm looking into adding MTS and Crawl control for added off road capability. My lease is 3 years and I'm not sure if I'll keep it. Im assuming these mods are easily reversible once reinstalling the OEM modules and reversing the calibration?
There's a ton of info here and I'm trying to sort through the best options for me. If anyone knows of the top of their head shoot me a message or something lol
IMO: It shouldn't be a problem to reverse mods. Not sure dealer would even notice the installation of these OEM parts and it might even be a selling point for the second owner.
