Anyone experienced grinding sound in a cold start
I live on long island where goes below 20 degrees in the morning now. When I cold start the car, there is a huge grinding sound from the engine. It lasts less than a second and doesn't continue once the engine is running.
Since the sound goes away when the car warms up, I want to find the cause of it first and bring to the dealer so that they won't push me away.
I googled it and some Honda owner said it may due to a bad starter for a manual transmission. I can't find any information for any Lexus with auto transmission. Anyone experienced this or can confirm the cause of it?

Thanks

Recording this sound would help.

With the abnormally cold temps here, my fan has started to make a pretty annoying sound after sitting outside at work all day.
It sounds different from yours, though, and eventually stops once things warm up.

+1..... I think I would be looking at the fan clutch.
Might be something to check

+2 fan clutch or fan cooling bracket. Sometimes the belt tensioner may make some grinding noise too if the bearing is bad.

I tried to record that sound but it didn't really come up. There were a few loud starts but no grinding sound. I don't know why maybe it has a certain temperature range and it's been too cold now. I'm pretty sure it came up almost every time at around 32 degrees.

I wonder if it could also be the AC compressor clutch? You may be able to test by making sure HVAC is fully turned off on starts.

^^ AC compressor runs immediately upon start up?

I don't think it should but perhaps the clutch is sticking and going out... more than likely one of the other suggestions though
Looks like it can operate down to 29.3F

I had this sound as well car was parked outside and here in Montreal it got almost to -42C, I remote started it and hear like a crazy screaming noise.
it did go away after 3-4 minutes.
I called Lexus right away and told me if it occurs again to bring it in.
Thank good it did not get that cold again but we got another 4 months to go

I think your sound might have different reasons from mine since it last a while. Mine was just like a friction of a second. To me, yours might have something to do with the inner part of the engine due to extreme temp. Just my guess not 100% sure.
