Default 275/55/20 vs 285/50/20

Sold a 2014 4Runner and bought a 2014 GX. I have ordered 20x9 Black Rhino Traverse with 275/55/20 Yokohama (Discount Tire exclusive). The wheels will be in mid week and I am unsure if this size tire will have significant clearance issues. Would I be better off with a 285/50/20? I have searched the forum and not a whole lot of information on these sizes. I actually found the wheels I wanted in the “18’s or 20s” thread. The one I copied used 285/50/20. Discount tire talked me in to 275/55/20 due to there being several more to choose from. Should I go with the 275 or 285??
Thanks
Jim

From what I’ve read, going to higher profile tire will affect your mph reading and render it inaccurate. Some also say increasing the overall diameter goes against what the original engineers designed for the vehicle. But thus far everyone that has done it that I’ve read on here has no regrets. Most are going higher profile while using stock wheels and report no rubbing or minor rubbing on the inner plastic and screws. It can be modified by using smaller screws or heat gun on the inner liner. since you’re going higher profile combined with more aggressive offsets that should theorectically decrease the chance of any rubbing.

Personally im going with 50 profile when I get my 20 inch black rhinos in a few months just because it is as close as possible to stock diameter.

275 55 is smaller than 285 50 and also closer to stock size

EDIT: Not compatible.

I shot an email off this company. They do have support for LX 570 so might be possible for speedometer calibration. I don't think Techstream can do anything.

http://www.hypertech-inc.com/SpeedometerCalibrator.aspx

"Hypertech’s Speedometer Calibrator can correct the speedometer and odometer for tires up to 54 inches (depending on the application), and/or non-stock rear gear ratios. This new device is engineered for consumers that want the speedometer recalibration functions of the Speedometer Calibrator without the additional expense of the other tuning features. The Speedometer Calibrator comes with a USB cable and a CD containing software to enable quick updates and upgrades over the internet. For an additional charge, the Speedometer Calibrator can be upgraded to a Speedometer Calibrator via the internet to include all the Speedometer Calibrator features available for that vehicle. Call Hypertech for details at 901.382.8888.

Simply plug Hypertech’s Speedometer Calibrator into the vehicle’s under-dash connector, select the new tire height and/or new rear gear ratio, and in a matter of minutes, the vehicle’s computer is reprogrammed for accurate readings (as required by law)."

im talking about diameter. 55 profile on a 20 inch wheel will make it further away from stock specs (larger diameter). Which is why most aftermarket shops would recommend a 50 profile on a 20 inch wheel.

275/55/20 has LARGER circumference (about 2.2%) than 285/50/20. If it is me then I'll go with 275/55 instead because I want a little more sidewall (curbs and potholes prevention).

Default Update

The 275/55/20 rubbed way too much. I returned them and now have the 285/50/20. The 275's need significant trimming and fender liner mod.

I am kicking myself for rubbing for so long. I thought I would need to use the heat gun and finally got around to what the problem was. Sure enough it was simply removing the inner running board screw that has been mentioned here several times

Resurrecting this because I am getting tires tomorrow for my new Black Rhino Highland wheels 20x9.5 with 12 offset. Ordered Michelin Defender LTX M/S in 275/55-20 at Discount Tire but a little nervous about the 32.2" diameter. Currently running some Falken Ziex STZ05s in 285/40-22 and no issues with rubbing. Brand new they had a 31.0" diameter. I'm considering going with the 285/50s instead. Anyone have the Defenders in 275/55?

Incidentally, right now I'm riding on the factory spare tire/wheel on one corner. If I do the 275/55 tires would I have problems if I got a flat and needed to use the spare? It's over 1.5" smaller diameter.

Can you post an update for the 275/55/20 defenders? Any rubbing? I’m looking at that exact size for my 2016 460. Considering a 2” lift but curious if it will fit at stock height. Also, can you confirm rim size. Is it -12 offset?

My previous setup:
2" Dobinsons Lift
20x9" Relations Race RR5-V in 0mm offset
275/55/20 KO2

Only rubbed plastics, which was cured with a heat gun and utility knife.

Default 275/55/20

I have Black Rhino Traverse 20x9 +15 offset wrapped with Falken Wildpeak AT3W 275/55/20.

They will rub on stock height. Removing the infamous protruding bolt will help but still rubs on liner on full turns. I am actually planning to install 2” lift soon (my suspension order is on back order atm).

I ended up going with the 285/50's. Yes the Highlands are 20x9.5 with +12 offset. I am stock height and there is a tiny bit of rubbing at full turn but nothing huge. Next time I wash the truck I might get out the heat gun and push the fender liner in a bit. It's really minor rubbing though. I'm glad I went with the 285's.

Looking at the fender liners, I would have to say that just because there is rubbing on one vehicle doesn't mean yours will rub with the same tire size, as the liners are just flimsy, easily deformable plastic and there most certainly is some minor variation in their positioning relative to the wheel/tire when comparing one GX to another.

With this setup my tire walls are sticking out beyond the fender a little, probably about 5-6mm by my estimate. I will post some pics as soon as I wash it.
