Considering GX470 vs. GX460 for pre-owned purchase
#16
I wonder if it is more butt dyno versus reality with 470 & 460? Motor Trend tested a 460 back in 2010 and got 0-60 in 6.9 seconds. I don't think a 470 gets within a second of that. A lot could be related to the throttle programming and gearing (5 versus 6 speed) on 460 although I don't really have any complaints with use of sports mode and hammering it down when needed. tecman's Pedal Commander comments show it may help in perception.
• 470 weight is 4817
• 460 weight is less than 5200 lbs
• Torque ratings are pretty close. 470 - 323@3400 / 460 - 329@3500
• 38 more HP on the 460.

New member here....hello!
One other advantage of the Gx460 over the GX470 is the sealed main driveshaft. There is no need to push lube into your zerks unlike the gx470 or 4runner.
No timing belt and no zerk lube service is a no brainer over the 470!

That is not accurate on the zerks. There are 6 of them
Zerks
(1) Front Slide Yoke
(1) Rear Slide Yoke
(2) Up front one for each u-joint/spider
(2) Two each u-joint/spider in rear
S - Y -S (Transfer Case) S - Y - S

I'd probably keep looking... any competent mechanic could do this in less than hour. I would assume most would have a lift which makes the job even easier.

If some people who do the service themselves do it every 5-10k miles and others never get service done because of trusting the dealer, would it be safe to get the service done every 20-30k miles and go out of state to perform it (finding another shop to do it)

There will be differing opinions of course...
for me...I'm of the once a year mindset since I do go off pavement some so this puts me in the 10-15K range and easy reminder for me to keep up on it.
If you are primarily on asphalt 20-30K miles should be fine or every 2-3 years. I might be pushing it there but contamination far less on road than off.
It's kinda like the "lifetime" AT fluid until you see that severe service and recommended changes at 60K miles should occur if you do any heavy loads or even use a cargo carrier on the roof.
I'm just trying to ensure I get a long ....long life out of this rig and keep the maintenance and surprises to a minimum.
