I just replaced the rear brake pads due to dealers recommendation and they resurfaced the rotors too. They actually asked me to do that during my last visit 6 month ago but I didnt do it that time. I did it this time during regular maintenance and they charged me total 360$ for that. Mileage is about 45K. Front ones were changed (not by me) during 35K according to service record.

Almost exactly what mine were when they started dragging. And I drove them too long before replacing.

I developed a shudder upon braking, and eventually a slight squeak so I went ahead and replaced all 4 rotors and pads all around at 55k miles. The front pad retainer pins need to be removed and cleaned decently regularly to ensure they don't rust in to the caliper and become a pain in the *** later.

i would put some of the grease on the hole pins.

We recently had a brake job done at NTB. The GX was in for a balance/rotation and they alerted me to the front brakes. I normally do these jobs myself, but we were leaving for a long trip (taking the GX) so I let them do it. It was ~$450 for front pads and new rotors. The rear brakes were fine.

To me, your Dealer quote seem VERY high since they are not replacing the rotors.

BTW, the NTB rotors now have rust on the rotor "hats" and looks like crap. The wife doesn't notice it (it is her ride) but I will be replacing the rotors myself in the not-too-distant future. I am not knocking NTB, just a reminder that there are differences in the quality of work and the parts used.

althought the rust isnt a big deal, it can cause things to stick together and doesnt look nice

used to be, .if you don't hear a grinding noise when applying the brakes, the pads are not at the wear limit

The rotors alone is pretty cheap too. EBay is probably the best place to get brakes and rotors due to cheap or free shipping.

Stock OE rotors, not OEM and Aftermarket rotors dont require replacement if theyre in spec, and/or have no abnormal wear such as pad transfer or hub runout. Resurfacing is a plus, but most folks dont have access to a lathe thats affordable or a mechanic who wants to do it over just either slapping on pads on a n old rotor or just replacing the rotors.

the OEM that will be as close to OE is akebono for most Toyota applications in pads. They usually are the OEM for the stock OE parts, and will be very close to their OE contract parts. For rotors pick up anything thats coated on the hub, but besides the quality of a rotors is hard to judge as only a few mfgs out there and most are relabeled. Centric is popular option, but honestly any MNC is good option as those offer some pretty interesting and favorable warranties.

rather spend the extra $100 to get the good stuff. who knows how good those pads and rotors are. for 25 extra a wheel you can get the best rotors and best pads. no worry about the rust, performance, or anything else
plus no need to do the break in procedure
