Real time monitoring with Bluetooth OBDII Scan Tool
We just replaced a late model Subaru Forester with a 2015/Lux. I often drive during the summer in very hot areas of Nevada and Southern California. One of the very few things I miss about the Subaru was the ability to monitor oil temperature in real time. In the Fozzie, the oil temperature worked through a range of from about 207ºF around town and into the 240's (should one want to live dangerously, I suppose) driving up the hill out of Death Valley. I drove the Subaru such that I never exceeded 238ºF oil temperature, having heard somewhere that 240º is about as hot as you ever want synthetic oil to get. I was amazed at how sensitive oil temp is to stress on the drivetrain and how much it would move around in the mountains, passing cars, etc.
The GX, of course, does not have this gauge. However, I discovered that there are bluetooth OBDII scanners that I can pair with an iPhone. Doing this, I can apparently get oil data from not one, but two sensors along with an overwhelming amount of other information if I like.
So, great. And I love me a gadget! But I have also heard that using these adapters continuously is not a good idea and can cause data errors within the vehicle. I am considering a "BlueDriver Bluetooth Professional OBDII Scan Tool for iPhone" (found on Amazon), as I am told certain cheaper/poorly made ones can actually cause damage to circuits. If you have tried continuously monitoring data from your GX while driving, have you had problems? These devices are very intriguing.

Just out of curiosity, what do like to monitor as you drive? Looks like people are using these for all kinds of things with no reported problems. Suddenly I am looking at other vendors and apps. It might be worthwhile to see how the various apps display information, and which adapters play best with which apps. I am beginning to think this is a very cool tool indeed. I hadn't picked up those other discussions in searching, see must've used the wrong search terms. Anyway, thanks.

So far...I've used mine mainly for TPMS, coolant temps, transmission fluid temps
Also the OBD Fusion with model year specific expansion pack is almost like a portable Techstream for troubleshooting purposes.

I used this continuously for about a month. used torque lite on the phone
never had any data problems, and I dont see how you could but i suppose it is possibe
I measured temps because as soon as it got hot the throttle body would open up a bit then my ecu would shut down my fun and put me into limp home. I used it while i waited for a new throttle body to know when to start to keep the revs up so it wouldnt hit that problem area and limp. had to keep above 1500rpm once i got to 149 or so or else limp. like in the movies, had to keep the rpm up at all times.
