Anyone else had this problem with their GX? Mine has 76K miles and the transmission is having to be replaced. I heard this is very unusual. I take extremely good care of my car. So thankful I bought the extended warranty!

That is a rarely reported failure.
OP: Are you the original owner? If not I wonder if they previous owner towed a lot? That in itself isn't bad but if they towed in overdrive all the time I wouldn't be surprised with failure in any rig.

Coming up on the end of my warranty so curious what exactly you're experiencing as well.
Also wondering what this would cost out of pocket....

I have never towed anything with this car. I purchased it certified from Lexus with 30,000 miles on it. I have never had any trouble with it until now. They are replacing the coolant as well. I was actually out of town when it started giving me problems. It was having problems switching gears and jerking. We knew it had to be the transmission.

OP: Ok... so the first 30k miles of use is the big unknown. It could just be a random failure too but still rare.
JDMUSCLE: I agree on AT coolers and plan to get one for mine. That being said if one just leaves in drive and tows heavy loads over steep grades you can bring the temps up pretty hot even with an AT cooler on there. IMO: Overdrive doesn't do the engine any favors.

I would chalk this up to random defect. Nuts!

This in no way diminishes the out of repair cost stated but $3k is actually pretty cheap for an AT repair. I wonder if equivalent to a rebuild or just a replacement of the TC? I've heard plenty of $5k-10K stories from friend, co-workers, etc.

I thought that seemed on the low side as well. They are replacing it. I will be sure to ask what the final cost is.

You can probably make any aftermarket one work.

Curious about this. It does make sense in my head, but wondering exactly why. Is it better to drop a gear? Is it bc there's less strain on the transmission if the engine is revving higher and not "lugging" in OD?
