Default Aftermarket Audio system

It looks like my head unit is dead with no luck of trying to reset the unit. What after market unit would you guys look at to replace the double din area. I am hoping to incorporate the factory reverse camera if possible. I would like to add some decent sound to the GX as well. The factory Mark Levinson system was adequate for me. However, I might have to replace the speakers if required. Which ones do you guys recommend without breaking the bank. I am more into SQ and not SPL when it comes to audio systems. However, I mostly listen to 80's MP3 files.

Unfortunately, your option is very limited. The OEM unit also control all your A/C logical, there is just no option from after market. The best bet would be shopping from junk yard. As far as the area concern, do keep in mind, all Lexus cameras uses 6v power supply, and most after market units only support 12v, you will need to add voltage step down if you do choose after market head unit (assume you find way to control A/C separately. From my experiences of working with surround view option, the reverse camera power source for GX is also from the head unit. Just for your reference.

You can get a used Navigation unit and swap the whole thing.

Thanks hzhao. Have you seen this option? It suppose to retain your factory AC control.

That is the same option as I have been testing (discussed on the thread under "Tesla style tablet". Unfortunately, that option require a working OEM head unit, the unit only replace the display and radio function. The retained A/C and setup functions are from original head unit.

I see. The lower control unit is more expensive from '14+ compare to '10-13.

10-13 model year Nav is hard disk based, there is a separate control unit built in behind screen (the top half of the unit). 14+ changed to micro SD based unit and also integrated control unit all into the lower half part.

On the 4runner forum, they have an android based unit that replace the oem unit and still use the factory connectors. I am checking to see if they have a GX unit as well.

Stupid question......why not just get an OEM unit and replace it and not worry about the other stuff?

the cheapest one one Ebay is around $1700 used. I think the new one is a lot more and the navigation is not that great. That's my personal opinion though.

I hope that your 3rd party HU will fit nicely with OEM stuff. Replacing the HU and Mark Levinson audio with aftermarket will be very costly especially if you have to ask an audio shop to do it.

You will be facing the same issue as 4 runner does not combine the control unit which provide CAN BUS information for many control signals. What the after market just replace the radio and nav part of the system, which is exactly what you are seeing here. For anything such as steering control, car information display etc, have to rely on control unit. In GX, those are built into the control unit which had malfunction. Unless you can get this to work, any those add-on will not do anything for you.
