Default Cargo area needs a trunk release button

Has anyone added a secondary trunk or glass hatch buttons to the cargo area?

I closed the barn door while changing the cargo area light bulbs to LED yesterday, I completely forgot that the GX was missing a release button inside and had to crawl out through the middle row.

I could see it being useful for people camping.

This may give ideas on how to implement. This posters door couldn't be opened but they put in a quick release. Perhaps a nice latch handle or electric actuator w/button mounted somewhere?

I’m inclined to go electric solenoid with a small push button.

This should be fairly simple to implement

Would be a great idea and useful. Lexus engineers had 16 years to add something.

I did some reading and found Some of the 4runners and Land Cruisers have done a similar mod. The hardest part will be finding the correct wires to tap into. I’m thinking the switch would go best in the slot cutout where your hand is supposed to go in order to swing close the door.

Something like this could work:
Amazon Amazon

theres also push versions, these are like wimpy idle stop solenoids.
need to look at how much push or pull is needed, and the current draw. the 4runner has an advantage, the window motor wiring could be used, there's enough supply current.
in the GX case, might need to run a new wire, maybe from the back where the AC outlet is

Couldn't you just pop the hatch with the remote and reach out to open the door?

While that would work this is for scenarios where you forgot your key, don't have it on-hand, 3rd row passenger with half of seat down could get themselves out...etc

On the Land Cruiser Prado there are small seat in the third row that face each other. There is a latch that releases the rear door. The device does exist.

see that latch above

IMO: The cost for this actuator setup would be considerably less though than tracking down all the parts and rear door plastics. Not to mention the shipping costs.

Yes, that could be possible. I don’t carry the actual key fob with me anymore, which is one of the cons of having the credit card key. There are no buttons on it
There are some other instances as Acrad mentioned about that would be nice to have a interior button.

I hadn't noticed the 12V electric water valve in upper right corner.

I have one of those KAON tables on mine.

Revisiting this topic again.
Has anyone found the wires to tap into to open the glass window or door from the inside? I had the trim removed for the Kaon install and it reminded me about this.

Just follow the wires which go into push button to open glass hatch. That is how many did for Land Cruiser for both additional hatch light and to open lift gate. GX seems to have mechanical rear door so the only option I see is connecting switch to the popup rear glass. I have seen kits to have the whole door open electronically but that is a different project and with such a big door I would be afraid to hit something all the time.

Looks like my link earlier in thread was broken.

If you you look at post 62 here this is part of the handle mechanism you would need to tie into. This was emergency release another member had to quickly setup to get door open.
