I put my wife’s ‘17 GX in drive this morning and there was a strong thump/thud from the back end of the car. Also, the car did not move after releasing my foot from the brake. I shifted it to neutral and back to drive; same issue. I then gave it a little gas (thinking that maybe I was stuck on a rock or something the vehicle had to roll over (gravel driveway). With some gas, the vihichle had a sting thump again, then started moving.
Amyone else experience something similar, or have any idea what this could have been? The sound was definitely mechanical and didn’t sound good. There are <20,000 miles on this car.
I'd take into dealer for that issue....always potential for a code to show up in Techstream, Torque or OBD Fusion but as under warranty I'd have dealer look into it.
Notice any leaks under the vehicle from rear diff to rear of motor?

Got under the car earlier and didn’t notice any leaks. Will bring it to the dealer tomorrow and see if any codes pop up.
It has driven fine since this morning, so wondering if there was a drivetrain glitch with the computer and it didn’t properly put it in gear. The strange thing is that it engaged when I gave it some gas. Main concern isn’t about it happening again, but more about the wear and tear it may have caused the two times something loudly engaged. I like to drive my vehicles for 8-10years and 200k miles; makes me anxious when something like this happens at 17k miles.
If you don't have any warning lights on the dash, and it's been fine ever since, I'd assume you had a rock from your gravel driveway stuck in the emergency brake or brake caliper. You didn't mention anything about having used the park brake, but here in Utah we sometimes have park brake assemblies that freeze when parked outside overnight with the brake engaged, and your exact symptoms will happen until moving forward until the ice breaks. If there was a rock stuck back there it wouldn't matter whether you use the park brake or not, it could still get stuck in the mechanism and give those symptoms. Or something along the lines of that.
Just to provide an update. The dealer didn’t find any codes or anything wrong. Their theory was that due to a lot of rain and high humidity (Louisiana) the brake calipers were stuck and once I gave it enough gas, it broke free. This goes along with the rock theory was provided in a reply. This makes sense because I definitely felt the hang up in the back end.
Thanks for the replies and I’ll keep an eye on things.
Sounds like a bad universal joint on the drive shaft. It was common and covered in-warranty on all Gen 1 GX's. However, it should have been resolved on all the Gen 2's. Check with a dealer on it.
I did a search with no results so thought I would ask here. I set my parking brake on steep driveways and often forget to disengage it so I drive 10 or so feet and get the warning beep.
I feel that the parking brake is now ineffective, possibly worn down with me riding it so many times or simply needs an adjustment. Has anyone adjusted this? Possible to over tighten this or maybe I need to replace the shoes?
Do you think the auto-adjuster is seized? Or cable slack? I've had both, although not on a Lexus. I'm planning on working on my GX brakes soon, and wonder what you find. Have you tried the back up and brake process?
