I guess I had never seen this config before....I had do a double take on ad and checked brochures that 3rd zone was a standalone option outside of the Comfort Plus Package on a Base 10-13 models. I don't see this as a standalone option '14+. No rear heated seats.
A little background...just pulling this off Wikipedia but looks like GX 460 was sold through May 2012 and then they dropped in the 4.0L GR-FE V6 from the 4R and renamed it the GX 400 until it was discontinued in November 2017.
Ok... looking at some FSM HVAC data they installed a PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient) heater to supplement heater on cold days in Chinese market GXs. I can see the outline on my heater assembly where this would go but it isn't a readily removable panel. One would have to cut the outline for this assembly to fit. No idea if wiring harness or overall retrofit either.
It is unlikely that it will fit on US spec vehicles without major modifications. However, I've had great luck with Webasto supplemental heaters. They are a small gas (or diesel) motor that heats coolant, circulates it and, when warm, turns on the interior fan to heat the interior and melt snow on windows. You can get either a remote via keyfob, your phone, or a timer. These things use about a gallon of gas in 12 hours. I've had them in two personal cars and in a company surveillance van and they worked great. Here is a brochure in German. The US dealers don't stock these (they do the ones for trucks and buses) but can get them.
my guess is that it would be an easy add.
years ago I got a few PTCs. Added a computer fan, no discrete heat control but could add if not wanting to rely on the self regulating setting of the PTC. This went in the footwell area, heated my toes in the winter blowing the heat downwards.
as long as you move the hot air away it will continue to convert to heat. if you dont move the hot air it will shut off then youre not getting all the conversion possible.
if adding a PTC in the OEM location I would skip using their power control.
the 200W PTC is about the size of a cell phone.
its not currently installed since i was changing some other stuff around. maybe i need to add it back in.
this would be an easier add for <30$. if the dimensions wont work for you then you could buy the parts separate then add them where they fit.
its 500W which ends up about 40A. theres some bigger versions but at some point you need to consider the alternator. this is where the gas versions start to win.
What is the purpose of the grill located in the right rear interior wheel well? Is it an air intake for rear air? I’m hauling around a shedding dog and wondered if I need to place filter over grill.
Open the rear door, looking to the right there is a plastic housing that covers the right rear wheel. Built into the housing are louvers/grills. Are the grills air intakes for evaporator first tear A/C?
