Default Preparing for road trip, should I be worried?

I've had my 2010 GX460 for a few months now and am getting ready to take it on its first road trip. It has 88k and will be getting the 90k service before making the trek. The only thing I'm worried about is the possibility of the secondary air injection pump unexpectedly failing during the trip.

From my understanding, the pump only starts when it is cold (correct me if I'm wrong). Temperatures will be 60 degrees plus the entire time. Would you be worried?

Dont' fret....

Do you have a OBD Reader? Users here have shown that you can reset out of limp mode resetting codes if this issue shows up.

To stay out of limp mode in event of a failure disconnect the air pump and reset codes. You will still have a Check Engine Light but it won't go into limp.

Air pump is located under that front cover over radiator and near the power steering reservoir and windshield washer fill. Either remove before trip or take a tool which you can use to remove all of those retainer clips.

I have a post here showing connector to disconnect, Let me find and I will add to thread.

If you don’t disconnect air pump you will have to reset codes each time you start vehicle. IIRC you can just reset codes while vehicle is running and carry on without limp mode.

Thanks for the detail. I'll order an OBD reader and do the UNI mod before we leave. That will be way cheaper than keeping a bypass kit on hand and will make me feel better about not having to limp there or back!

Sad that an owner of a Lexus 460 with 88k miles doesn't feel confident about a road trip

This is really a scar on Lexus that will be brought up for many years...

If you don't feel confident just order a new filter and replace it before the trip. It only takes a few minutes.

That’s exactly what I did on our last road trip at 78K miles. Cheap insurance.

Do you have a part number for the foam filter by any chance?

O the filter mod. I thought they were referring to changing the actual foam inside of the pump before it deteriorates.

You remove the foam and put on the external filter

Dropped it off for service this morning and the first thing he said is, "Oh! Looks like there's an open recall for the secondary air injection pump, I'm going to check on that and see if we can replace it while it's getting serviced."

Crossing my fingers.

If they do fix...bonus.... but if not a cheap less than $20 option is just a cheap OBD2 reader to reset codes.
