Unless the 17 has the driver.support package it's not likely to have any safety features beyond parking assist sensors and bsm. The driver support package would get ya lane keep warning (no active assist, just noise warning) and radar cruise control. Nonetheless I say do it. The GX is above and beyond the 4R.

Yuppers. I'm going to sit in the IS as well to see if making it a DD and keeping the Runner is a better option....

The GX does have a bigger turning radius than the 4R, so you might want to try parking it at a grocery store.
As far as reliability is concerned, it is easily on par with the 4R and perhaps a bit better.

The two vehicles don't even compare - the 4 Runner is more utilitarian (and gutless),the GX is nicer all around. If you want to build a 'mall crawler' and waste your money get a 4Runner. If you want a nice SUV to tale on road trips get a GX

If you want all the safety features the 2020 GX is guaranteed to have it at all trim levels. Searching for a Diamond in the rough 2017 GX with older versions of those safety features may not save you all that much time and money. You have a lot more negotiating ability on a new car where there are similar models at multiple dealers.
I understand your desire for these safety features. I was able to retrofit ACC and Pre Collision in my 2011 GX460.

Just returned from the Lexus dealer. Maybe the newer GX is more ergonomically appointed. This 2016 would have not work for me. Screen is down and to the right controls feel like they are down and forces me to take my eyes off the road. Lovely vehicle but the NX's translation of all controls and screen to basically eye level is what I was hoping to find.
Wife and dealer rep were surprised that I didn't care for it....I was disappointed.

Don't get me wrong. If my wife had the choice she would have purchased the GX in a heartbeat. It's a beautiful vehicle.

I'm looking at keeping the 4Runner. I really am comfortable with my "beast". Researching 2016 Genesis for a new DD. Wife used to have a 2009. the 3.8V6 AWD has all the safety items I want and the CPO warranty looks solid.
