Forgot why Lexus, as dependable as they are, would choose this poor tire and for how many years?

I personally wanted the more aggressive looking all terrain look and chose the falken wildpeak at3. However I previously had the Michelin Latitudes. Those sure were a smooth, soft driving excellent freeway tire. Not so good on winding roads, a little too soft for me. However they sucked in the snow. The Falkens are way better in the snow. I spent alot of time researching tires and found some excellent reviews about the Michelin Defender and the Bridgestone Alenza. I am not sure if the Alenza is the one that comes stock from the factory on some GX models, but my mechanic was pushing for me to get those on the GX. He also has a GX and had two sets of those over the years on his. He really likes them for most SUVs. Great tread life and he spends alot of time up in Tahoe in the snow. Anyway. I hope this helps.

... with the above reinforced by a majority buyer base as researched by Lexus marketers that want cushy comfort (re: vague handling) over a tire that provides solid contact with the road.
Beyond that, go back and review the number of people (families) who died as a result of their incompetence (Firestone/ Bridgestones ... same Japanese company) when dealing with the Ford Explorer debacle where they systematically denied selling defective tires until completely cornered by the facts.
So we all now live with the PITA of TPMS as a by-product. Leave it to the Germans who later realized that the tach-wheel used by the ABS system could also be used to detect the (constant) rotational speed difference (difference in diameter) between tires as an indication of tire inflation ... eliminating the need for a standalone pressure sensor system.

I just bought a 2017 myself. 19k miles and certified with the Luxury package... and Bridgestones. I’m not a big Michelin fan either (not sure why they get so much love). Depending on what type of driving you’ll be doing, I’d look at Continental (more all-season use) or Nitto Dura Grapplers if you’ll be taking advantage of the GX’s Prado capabilities. And consider a bit larger tire (265x65x18) if you want a bit “fuller/aggressive” look that will not adversely impact the road feel.
