Cargo Carriers

I have never had any melt issues even with hitch rack sitting in stock receiver. I would notice too as I often have either bags of trash or recycleables I am bringing back from my cabin strapped down with bungie net.

The pin bushing can fall out from the bottom and just noticed melting on the sheathing over the cable that attaches to the lock pin.
Overall construction is sound but little details here and there are a little lacking the more I have it. Pros still exceed the cons by a large margin.

No worries :-) . Just odd... I've never had any melting issues in 15+ years of using a rear cargo basket off of my receiver. In fact nothing until I got the Wilco. I need to measure if this actually pulls in carrier closer than stock receiver somehow. If they had left the sheathing off of the pin retainer cable I probably would have never noticed.

I have the hitch gate extended that I use for the spare tire on my camper trailer, before heading to Colorado I moved it to the GX to test it out for carrying a full size spare. I did not like what it did to the departure angle and it felt like it was sticking out on the passenger side quite a bit. Now this was the extended so that was to be expected but what it did to the departure angle was not going to work. I had a Metal Tech bumper sitting in the garage and pulled an all nighter to get it installed the day before we left.

Swing out cargo carrier
Anyone using a swing out cargo carrier, with or without the box?
Pros/Cons?
We're looking at extra storage options for road trips and camping.
Thanks!

I'm using a cargo carrier with my Wilco Hitchswing. Price has gone up a lot since I got last year. I think I paid $380. This also keeps the cargo carrier well above the exhaust for any melt issues.

Be careful when loading with other products where items sit in relation to the exhaust pipe. You can find lots of melt stories online. Probably no problems with any products if you are just carrying bicycles.
It kind of depends on your needs. The Hitchswing still allows you to use your hitch for towing without removing.
Looks like weight limits are similar

[Hitchswing]
- Hitchswing features the same secondary receiver as our Hitchgate™ line, tow-rated at 7,500 lbs (max trailer weight) and 750 lbs (tongue weight). Not every trailer will be compatible with the full range of motion of the Hitchswing. Not every vehicle will have the same capacity as the Hitchswing. ALWAYS adhere to your vehicle’s maximum limits.
- 30″ wide from hitch to pivot bolt, 3.5″ minimum depth from 1st hitch pin to back of support arm. 4.5″ to the next hitch pin hole. Hitchswing support arm sits at hitch height, rising only 2.5″ above the receiver. The swing-arm sits above the support arm approx. 6″.]
- 4.5″ of clearance required from center of hitch pin hole rearward for it to be compliant with wedge lock system. You may need to relocate spare tire from underneath or modify to gain the necessary clearance.
- WEIGHT LIMITS: The further your load extends from the Hitchswing, the lighter your load needs to be. If your load is within 3 feet(Or 18″ from hitch to center of load) of the Hitchswing, the max. load is 250lbs. If your load extends beyond 4 feet(Or 24″ from hitch to center of load), the limit drops to 150lbs. The further away the load is from Hitchswing the heavier the load is on it AND your vehicle.

Yes, that may be a big selling point for some. There was one more company I had come across with something similar...I'll have to dig back to see if I can find it.

Found it..Kuat Pivot.

Like the Yakima, it doesn't appear to allow you to concurrently use the factory hitch for towing while the swing away is mounted.

For what I paid for my Hitchswing back in 2018 I can tell there are some engineering advantages (IE: The lock mechanism) and it would be worth the extra $100... not sure today it would be worth the extra $300+ though compared to that Kuat Pivot today in 2019. The Hitchswing is tightened up in the receiver with a mechanism that you have to use a torque wrench on and it is so solid you think it is part of the vehicle.. Looks like Kuat just goes in receiver.
Don't get me wrong...this is definitely a good option though.
I didn't check warranty on Kuat but Wilco is lifetime limited assuming they haven't been abused.
