Totally my fault from the last weekend. I was in neutral rolling a few MPH and just was not thinking and hit the switch to go 4L from 4H while the vehicle was still moving. She made a gear grinding sound for just a second or two. I immediately switched back 4L, came to a complete stop, and then switched without a problem. I feel like an idiot. Do you think it's worth getting the fluid changed again? The system acted fine for the rest of the day. Maybe it's a non issue.

 

You're fine. In the old days of manual 4wd lever engagement, you get these alot when engaging from 2wd to 4hi then from 4hi to 4lo.

 

The transfer case where the Hi and Lo range gearsets are is not a syncromesh
setup, a certain amount of gear clash is inevitable. Hey, that is why it is an SUV
and not a wimpy crossover, right?

 

I thought it would be fine but was thinking about metal in the fluid but it happened for such a short period of time. Appreciate the advice.
