Then it needs a seatbelt. If you want just a storage compartment, then you don't need a seatbelt, but you should probably bolt it down to keep it from flying about.

BradTank suggested here an upholstery shop might be able to help out with a custom console.

Lightbulb Captain's Chairs Questions, Concerns, Comments

Hello Looking to get a new or used GX 460 with captain's chairs (I think!). They look better and while you lose possibly a middle seat in the back, from a seating perspective the car still meets my needs.

With that, they are much more hard (or impossible right now) to find in the color combo that I want. I have googled the pros and cons of them and one con seems to be less cargo space? How can that be?

Does anyone have the Captain's chairs and wish they didnt? Do they not fold flat or something?

Thanks

I have second row captain’s chairs and I love them. They fold just as flat as the split bench. The only "reduced" cargo space would be the 10-ish” gap between the seats backs when both are folded flat. That would only be an issue if you are trying to stack as many small items in the rear as possible. Larger items can span that gap easily.

Naturally, you give up the potential of a third passenger in the second row but I find the third row seats to be way less claustrophobic, easier to access and potentially usable with captain chairs in the second row.

One small thing to consider is that with second row captains chairs, there is always a gap to the rear compartment/ third row. So if you leave the third row folded and store small loose items in the rear they can slide into the second row.

Passenger can lie down on the bench on longer trips.

How does that work? Aside from being extremely dangerous, it is also illegal in most states.

Yep - it is only legal (no rear seatbelt) in about 11 states (as a secondary in 25 states - so there needs to be some other cause for stopping - of course, they can come up with anything I imagine). You can pretty easily use the middle belt to belt in, and ensure it is at your pelvis/hip - but I'm sure you would get pretty damaged in an wreak. That said, not sure how much less safe it to do that than recline all the way in the front seat. But fair enough, I agree it isn't the safest.

I actually was looking at the Acadia Denali when I bought my Gx460 because I really liked the captain chairs. Wish they were options all along.

Have 2nd row captains, love the setup, zero regrets. I place a waterproof garbage bag between the seats I picked up off Amazon.
Bench warrants the 3rd row kinda useless due to more difficult access imo...

Also have owned 4runners with the bench 2nd row, I will say if you plan on sleeping inside the vehicle the bench is likely better since it's a continuous surface when folded flat... although we did sleep in the GX once and the gap wasnt an issue. We used that area as our little night table.

We recently purchased a CPO GX and after looking at both the second row captain chairs were a deal breaker for us. We don't have kids so the second row is for the dogs.

I’m in the market for a luxury model and specifically didn’t want the captains chair. Kinda thinking maybe I wouldn’t mind it with the idea of reclining the chair all the way on long trips and sleeping a bit. Good heads up.

I've got the bench and would love the captains chairs in case any black interior captains people in California want to trade .
