Radio Issue
Hi All. At first I thought I was hearing things, then my family backed me up. The volume from the radio goes up and down by its self. At first I thought it was tied to the speed, but it changes at very different times. Does anyone know what would cause this? The dealership thinks I'm nuts!

Sorry... don't know what to think on that...
Does the volume number on the infotainment screen actually change intensity level on the screen? Is the volume **** loose in anyway? Maybe steering wheel controls are actuating through some short or again faulty connection there?

Wonder what life is of automotive hard drives?
Just curious how long these automative grade platter hard drives last in the '10-13 Infotainment units? The maps are updated at dealer via a Firewire 800 port above the gas pedal area.
They just hold the maps in the 460 AFAIK... but maybe some other data is on there as well. I haven't delved into it.
I wish the HD could also store ripped music like my old '2007 G35x does. In that vehicle 40GB is partitioned 30GB maps and 10GB music. That car doesn't even have a USB port but an old school full sized Compact Flash slot you use for portable music.
I think the '10-'13 460 drive is just a 30 or 40GB model as well
I thought I read someone doing a SSD swap on that car. My G is now over 11 years old on the stock hard drive so hope the one in 460 lasts a good long time too.
Probably not a big deal these days with all the other music options.... hoping a failed HD doesn't kill off any other functionality than navigation.

USB for now. When I had Audi I could import music on to HD and they call it juke box. Also it has two SD card slots plus MMI connector where one can plug in a specific adapter. My MB SUV has one SD card slot,
USB port, CD/DVD player holds 6 disc. One large capacity SD card can hold lot of music. I created folders for different category of music and pick and choose what I want to listen. Seldom use CD/DVD player.
To connect smart phoe I use USB-lightning adapter for iPhone. I notice only OEM adapter works properly.

Hmm, I never thought about the GX having a disk drive or solid state drive. The truck is built to go well beyond 300K miles so I hope the the electronics will do the same.
I know cost is a factor but SSD is the way to go with longevity and performance.

Most HDD (CF cards) failures were due to constantly writes/reads (think of gaming or big data crunching systems). Since the ones in the GX are mostly use for reads and rarely any writes, I would say they will last a while.

Looks like PATA HDD and not SATA from diagram and relatively easy to service. The ones in the Nissan/Infiniti's require a complete disassembly of the infotainment unit with more screws than I care to count.
It looks like some user level data is on the drive besides maps. I would assume one would have to pay the dealer to reload the maps.

This model seems to come up a lot as one possibly used.

Dirt cheap less than $20 these days.

I'm sure the aftermarket will have a solution if widespread failures are an issue down the road.
As an example, I have an older "lifetime" subscription TiVo unit that I wanted to keep using, a company has pre-formatted hard drives made for them they can sell you for people that want to keep them going.
My guess is though on cars they'll last a really long time, they don't have the write cycles a desktop/laptop user would have.
I know it's not apples to apples, but there's lots of cars with computer electronics from like the early 1980's still working fine. So 40+ years.

Thats a surprise for sure, wasnt the nickname for the endurostars the "deathstar" line up of garbage. If thats correct WOW. I would probably try to clone that onto an SSD and call it lifetime instead.
