Default 2018 GX Roof Rails Swap to 1st Gen Rails - Thoughts

Hello
Looking to change the roof rails on my '18 GX460. Thought about installing a Prado 150 set of rails.

Before I take the steps to order, import etc etc I'm wondering if anyone has any info on the 1st Gen Rail (not smooth, but lifted roof rails) to fit onto the GX 460 (2nd Gen).

I believe I saw someone post that the 1st Gen rails bolt pattern is the same as the 2nd Gen GX bold patterns and solves this problem more efficiently than sourcing the Prado rails via Japan or other market.

Looking to get a Yakima/Thule rack set up as a full expedition rack is overkill for my life.

Any thoughts and/or guidance is very welcome.

Cheers

It will fit but there one hole that doesn't line up. You will also have to cover the middle section of the rail with some silicon.

Btw, I use EZ Rider Towers and mount all my Yakima stuffs on it without issues.

You can get this

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Yakima-EZ-R...kAAOSwOjtfUb9X

And this

Then add a pair of 48" bars.

Thank you for the idea. I will check out. It may be the easiest way to add the Yakima/Thule option!

@bbqsoup to make sure I'm reading your reply correctly. You're using the EZ Rider Towers on the 1st Gen Rails, correct?

I thought the fj120 rails were a direct swap since they are the exact same part number as the fj150 Prado rails. The 4 Runner rack is where one bolt doesn't fit.

Yes you’re right. The 5th gen 4runner racks fit with missing bolt. I may be mistaken but I thought the 470 rack couldn’t fit right.

@IOP that's what I was hoping (read someplace but can't find now) as it's more economic than Prado 150 sourcing, import etc.

Was hoping to find someone that had executed.

I plan to do the same swap on my wife's GX. We use the GX to run between houses and the current roof rails proved to be nearly useless for all of our Thule racks. I have a lead at two locals yards with the parts in stock. I just need work to slow down to get them.

Check out this thread, it have me comfort to buy a used rail set. https://www.clublexus.com/forums/gx-...s-upgrade.html

I was looking at the 4runner racks previously too as you can get them used very cheap. I currently have 2 sets of Yakima towers for the van and the GX and would like to use just one for both to save space. I may revisit the 4runner rack in the future.

@IOP Yes, that thread is what I'm basing the Prado mod off of along with some emails from an individual that performed it. Just hoping to find a work around so I don't have to order JDM parts from Japan. Don't get me wrong, would i like to be able to drop into convos that I have a rack from Japan and took the time to do it? Sure, but no one cares, Ha. An easier solve, less time and more economical is a bigger win IMO. Just want a slimmer box and a slim basket up there. Will allow for a range of carry options. An expedition rack/plate sounds exciting and makes me feel very tough but I will never utilize it fully.

I appreciate your thoughts!
