This is probably as good an explanation as any

https://www.jdpower.com/cars/shoppin...il-in-your-car

"When too much oil is added, the level in the oil pan becomes too high. That allows a fast-moving lobed rod called the crankshaft to come into contact with the oil and essentially aerate it. The result is a foamy, frothy substance that cannot properly lubricate the engine. Think of this as your engine’s way of turning cream into whipped cream. No one wants whipped cream lubricating their engine. Also of concern, the extra oil creates excessive pressure inside your engine that will look for an escape through various gaskets and seals. If one or more of those fail, that will lead to leaks and costly repairs."

I always wondered how much oil was actually too much oil? I have run maybe a half qt to qt over sometimes in other vehicles had really had no noticeable issue. Next oil change I made sure to be precise.

My old pathfinder calls for 3.8 quarts and I always put 4 in.
For the GX, it’s 8.2 but I just put in 8. I think between the low and high mark on the dipstick is about 1 quartz.

Thanks again and never again to dealer for oil change!!
That would be my recommendation as well provided you have the means. I also had a similar situation when I bought my Tacoma brand new back in 2005. I took advantage of those free oil changes for the first 2 years but like you checked their work only to find they over filled mine by at least a quart on the first oil change. For those that don't know, the grease monkey performing the oil change uses a pump where they just dial in the number of quarts needed. Their excuse at the time was they had it set for a Tundra and not a Tacoma and hence why I ended up overfilled. Now, I only live about 5 miles from the dealer so no big deal but it certainly doesn't instill any trust in their service department which is why I have done all my oil changes since then. That all said, I highly doubt it caused any damage or long term issues to your motor but certainly understand your concern and position.

So the oil in my GX460 was last changed at the dealer I bought the car from (non Toyota/Lexus) almost a month ago and it was showing pretty high on the dip stick. Based on the info on this thread and not knowing for sure whether the dealer used synthetic oil, I took it to a local Toyota dealer for a $64 synthetic oil change, which I considered a decent price. I typically change my own oil but since my truck is still under power train warranty, I thought it best to have documented Toyota/Lexus oil change. Anyway, I get home and take a closer look at the invoice (I know, I should have done that at the dealership), and see they added 9qt of oil! I checked the dipstick and the level looks to be about 1/4" above the high level mark.
So, is that high enough to be of concern? Should I take it back to get some taken out?

Thanks.

If it was my GX, I would say Yes

The best oil change is the one you do yourself. Keep the receipts. Dealer uses the cheapest BULK oil
