Default Trailer Brakes

Have zero experience towing. Might rent a small Uhaul 4X8 trailer to haul some stuff on our way back down from the Northeast to TX. Here is the capacity info:
  • Volume: up to 142 cu. ft.
  • Max load: 1,650 lbs.
  • Gross vehicle weight: 2,500 lbs. max.
  • Empty weight: 850 lbs.
I won't put more than 500 pounds in the trailer (prob much less than that). I was a little worried that the trailer has no brakes. Will it is be an issue relying solely on the GX's brakes? Will be just my self and my wife and dog in truck. So I guess with our luggage max 600 pounds in the GX (prob closer to 500). Was thinking of maybe renting one down here in TX for a day or two to drive around on 35 and around town beforehand here in TX to practice so first time isn't on thousand plus mile trip. Before I even bother wanted to check that it even made sense to get something with no extra braking capacity.
Thanks!

IMO: You should be fine. Just make sure you keep extra distance between other cars and lower speeds.

I have a 8 x 10 trailer that weights about that much and has a 3500lb axle with full size wheels. It doesn't have trailer brakes and I haul a load of energy logs every winter that are one ton. I will have to check again but I think GVRW on that trailer is 3000 or 3200 lbs. I haven't looked at that in years.

My state (Washington) only requires them over 3K lbs.

Thanks! Yeah, I usually drive close to the posted limits and leave a large buffer. Drives my wife crazy seeing me squirm in the passenger seat whenever she drives and doesn't leave as much space as I would. Would keep it close to 55 if towing.
