Correct me if I am wrong but I do believe the 4.6 also has a vacuum switch valve. I came across this DIY a while back for the 4.3 and performed the cleaning on my SC430. I was surprised at the improvement. This may be more prevalent in older vehicles with more carbon buildup but I think it would be worth looking at on our trucks as well. Many who performed the procedure reported smoother idling and increased mileage.
Original Thread - I will take a look at mine tomorrow, that is for sure if we have one. I believe we do from the brief google search I made.
Well, I can confirm it does make a difference cleaning these little guys. My idle is smoother and less RPM fluctuations when in gear and stationary. Your results may vary.
The design is different vs 4.3 but all I did was remove hoses, electrical connection, sensor, and the round plastic boot or cap. Sprayed WD40 into the larger hole the boot covers and other sides as well. Let soak for a min or two and drain. Then I blew out the remaining solvent with my mouth. Let dry and reinstall.
I did not see any carbon buildup but I bet the solvent helps restore ideal performance of the actuator or whatever controls the valve insides. At least that’s my belief.
