So the guy threw out the fairing that forces air to go through the cooling stack and it caused an updraft(and probably a reduction in cooling) that ripped the latch off the hood?
I gotta say:
1. I find it hard to believe there is that much air pressure in the engine compartment to rip the latch off like that. If I had to guess the adjustable rubber bumpers on each side of the grill support were not putting enough pressure on the hood to keep it from rattling around and that lead to the latch coming off.
2. The fairing is 100% functional and should not be removed in any case.
3. Don't remove the fairing and you won't need hood pins I guess?

He takes that stock GX460 on trails that would make your toes curl. I think part of it was the removed cover and the other part of the puzzle is the rugged terrain. Only reason I know it to be true is I have ridden on a lot of the same trails on my dirt bikes and dual sport enduro. IMHO there are not many guys coming even close to going on as hard of trails on a modified GX let alone one that is almost bone stock except for tires and front bumper.
Not even close to what many have done, but took the GX off the pavement for sone sand roads.

Dunno -- hard to say the cause -- as noted Lexus now puts 3 hood latches on the new NX as well as spring loaded tensioners versus the rubber ones... so something is up..
Also note this car lives on horrible dirt roads -- basically it lives off-road ---
I want to think the little rubber nipples werent adjusted right at the factory -- but lexus putting 3 latches/strikers on the NX is suss...

Ya, we beat up up pretty good and push it hard. Also, we are in the desert, mostly unpaved washboard roads ... lots of abuse... but again, why did Lexus choose to put 3 latches on the new NX? and add spring tensioners too? hmmmm...?
