2019 GX 460 few brake replacement questions please
Hi! Thank you for taking a look.
The times are tough now so I am trying to replace my front and rear brake pads inexpensively on my 2019 Lexus GX 460.
A mobile mechanic alerted me that I will also have to replace ABS Sensors and/or Wear Sensors.
Is it true? There is nothing wrong with my brakes - i want to replace them because they are getting thin now still have 3-4K to go.
I can do basic pads replacement myself but dealing with ABS is beyond my skillset.
What else does it require? Do these brakes require any re-initialization in the computer?
Sincerely appreciate in advance,
Mike

How many miles on the vehicle ... seems early for pad replacement. No ... the ABS Sensors do not need to be replaced, If you do in fact need new pads, do yourself a favor and replace the Rotors and do not resurface given the latter results in rotors that quickly warp and cause brake pulsing ... etc.

Thank you for taking a look. I really appreciate it. The SUV has 32K miles. I looked at both - front and read - and they are getting low now especially rear pads. I've always worn out front first. Is it indicative of a problem?
Many thanks in advance,
Mike

That is much sooner than I would expect to need brake work, in fact my vehicles usually go over 100k before needing brakes. My FJ Cruiser made it to 125k for the fronts and the rears were still good at 134k when I sold it.
Having said that, driving styles vary and I know some people do go through brakes as fast as 30k. Nothing necessarily wrong with that, it just varies with how and where you drive.
I agree that I would just replace rotors rather than resurface (I was advised to do this by a friend who ran his own repair shop for many years), but if the rotor is relatively smooth and cash is in short supply I might be tempted to just put new pads on and replace the rotors next time. But you can get rotors cheap on ebay. I generally use OEM pads and cheap aftermarket rotors, with good success.

WOW ... the rear brake pads should easily last two times as long as the fronts ... with the fronts lasting 30,000 to 40,000 miles based on driving conditions ... so your fronts may be due, but the rears make no sense unless you are always hauling loads or towing. Have owned four (4) 4-Runner's ... one (1) FJ Cruiser ... and two (2) high mileage Lexus GX's (all essentially the same platform) and the rear brake pads on all have lasted minimally 80,000 miles.

Could there be an issue with the rear brakes dragging?
Is your MPG worse than usual?

i just changed mine 2017 at 48k both were thin but still had utility, however i tow a teailer and wanted to keep the brake pads thick.
so far after 1200mile trip with the trailer all seems to be working and no squeaking.
