Question Front and rear brakes & rotors at 23k?

Hey all..
I just returned from service which was supposed to be a normal 25k Service, but was hit with the unexpected, "you need brakes and rotors - front and back". Is this normal wear and tear for this vehicle's OEM parts? I am not a highway driver, I do a lot of stop and go around town stuff and the car also sat a lot (outside) in the Northeast during the height of 2020. I got it new so I have put every single mile on this car with exception of the first 78 due to dealer transfer. I realize this is a heavy vehicle clocking in at just shy of 5,200 lbs and stopping it in daily traffic is no easy feat and I do know climate and driving habits do play into these things too. Just curious if this is something I should be looking out for in another 23k-25k miles.

The fronts in mixed driving typically last 25-35,000 miles ... the rears typically last to 80,000 miles given the front brakes provide 70++ % of the braking due to forward weight transfer under braking. The rears will wear faster than the above if the rear of the vehicle is loaded ... people, luggage or towing.

This is one of many posts with the rear brakes wearing at the same rate as the fronts ... did Lexus soften the rear brake pads at some point ?

I’m on my original factory rotors in my 2010 460 with ~156k miles. That sounds like very premature wear if you have to replace them already unless Toyota skimped out and put ****ty ones on since 2010. Mine haven’t been resurfaced yet it looks like to. Maybe I got a unicorn?

Brake wear can vary tremendously based on vehicle usage and driver style. I tend to be easy on brakes. My previous vehicle (FJ Cruiser) went about 120k before replacing the front brakes, rears were still original when I sold it. But I know people that only get 25k from their brakes.

Having said that, GET A SECOND OPINION. I don't trust dealers at all, based on experience.

Staying (somewhat) consistent with the platform ... owning four (4) 4-Runners ... a GX470 ... a GX460 ... and an FJ Cruiser ... never have I exceeded 35-40,000 miles on the front brake pads ... and 80,000-odd miles on the rear brake pads. I always replace the rotors with brake pad replacement ... always ... not worth turning given the next round of pads never last as long as with new rotors. Toyota rotors typically warp to where turning only promotes the same happening that much sooner. My driving has always been a mix of semi-city and highway for reference.

Same here, I purchased Akebono ceramics last pad replacement and have to say they are really nice have lasted 25k and still going and doesn’t omit much brake dust. When I replace the rotors it has been the stocks from Advance Auto, I believe they are called something like Wearevers

My GX460 with 83k miles now, the central slot in the middle of brake pads is almost gone on the front, and maybe 2mm deep on the rear.

Take a look for yourself. Very easy to check. Good luck!

yes I saw the brake pads during a tire rotation at Discount Tires. New brake pads ordered and on the way.
