2022 Infotainment installation into older model?
As the title implies - is it possible to do this retrofit?
From what I can gather the dashboard is the same. The difference is in the upper and lower center dash units and the center console.
The 2022s will eventually end up in junk yards after a bad accident so….let’s talk about the possibility.

Unfortunately, 20-23 Crawl/MTS still hasn't been cracked/confirmed for retrofit
in time .... I will say probably a few years or more out someone will undertake the task though

Screen protector for 2022 touchscreen?
Has anyone found a screen protector for the touch screen on the 2022 models yet? I’ve noticed on my tacoma that they can get scratched pretty easily and want to put one on there asap.
Thanks!
Thanks!

I don’t recall this ever being offered for any GX. You could custom cut one though.

I reached out to Screen ProTech in September.
They stated they would need to test fit one in person.
They only over a gauge cluster protector currently.

I just ordered a set from photodon.com. They have a 10.3" size, which works on the IS350. I will post the results after I receive the screen protectors.

2022 GX Infotainment Longevity
Hi Everyone
Hope this hasn't been posted elsewhere - I couldn't find anything for the 2022 GX with the updated infotainment screen as it is specific to this year's refresh
I just put a deposit down on a 2022 GX Premium Plus - I didn't realized they had done the refresh and I think it looks great, it won me over where previously I was going to buy a new 4runner. I will buy a vehicle once and run it until the wheels fall off. Previously I was in a 2008 350K+ Honda Ridgeline that got in an accident. I take good care of my vehicles like I'm sure many others here.
When I was finalizing my deposit I said something about screen longevity. In my mind its just a screen which controls the radio being I've drove 2000's cars mostly. Sales rep mentioned that the infotainment system ML + NAV, new screen ETC cost $15,000 to replace! I was so stunned I visually recoiled. He remarked that on the new 2022 GX that all the climate control PHYSICAL ***** and other buttons on the dash are routed through the NAV/Infotainment computer and when it goes EVERYTHING goes. I suppose that is the way the car industry is heading but that worries me.
I asked if he sees these break and need to be replaced often and he replied that 'Dealerships make more money off of the service department than the car sale'. Which was SO odd to me, I'm coming to Lexus because I want to buy a GX that will last for ever as most Lexus/Toyota do.
This is making me want to back out for a new 4runner. After thinking on it, in another forum post I made on this (reddit Lexus sub) someone mentioned that he was most likely buttering me up for a extended warranty sales pitch. Which makes perfect sense.
But all in all - What are the chances this head unit breaks 10 years out and fries my whole dash and I need to pay 15,000 to replace it!! That's nuts. I mean I would understand some cost but it just blew my mind.
Thoughts? Thanks all

I would think that a head unit on a new Forerunner would cost the same, as well as other makes and models. I also think if a head unit is going to go south, it would go within the normal warranty. I am like you that I keep cars until the wheels come off. My 22 GX is my forth Lexus and I think they make great automobiles. Personally, I would not worry about the head unit going out. I am of the belief that if you need to buy an extended warranty on a new product, you need to consider buying a product that has a solid reputation for dependability. The Lexus GX has that reputation.

This concern could be with any make or model but yes this is a dependable Lexus. Being a new feature on the GX... sure this could be an issue with time but I think Lexus would cover it if a known problem.

Assuming you want to stay stock... If you look at current used prices on infotainment units of 10 year old units look at 10-15% of that "new" replacement cost.

The thing is too - I'm not sure how you would get an after market head unit for the 2022 GX because there is so much functionality built into it. I doubt an after market head unit would integrate into the car's settings like the stock one

IMO: Functionality of '10 head unit is basically the same as a '22. HVAC is integrated as well.
Beyond 4 years or 50k miles (beyond Lexus warranty)no one will be paying new MSRP on a stock infotainment unit. If still that expensive you would be pulling out of a wrecked '22+.
Frankly not seeing any stock infotainment unit out of a 10-19 model for more than $3k.
Of course you can still find a '10+ navigation list for about ~$15k

No one is paying that.... they are going with aftermarket repair or used parts from recycle market at 10-15% of that price.
Bottom Line: IMO... don't worry about it... statistically not going to be an issue

My wife has a 2019 Lexus GX460 ... I have a 2012 Toyota FJ Cruiser and a 1973 Ford Bronco ... while an ASE Master Mechanic ... I ABSOLUTELY HATE that vehicles have gotten so "cabin tech" driven ... if people want that, then great ... but be prepared to pay for the consequence and inconvenience of updates, future incompatibility and future repair cost(s) ... for me, Bluetooth connectivity is enough ... IMHO a vehicle is for transportation first.
If I want to change the ventilation fan speed in the FJ Cruiser ... it's a simple turn of a physical **** ... no need for "eyes-off-the-road". In the 2019 GX460 ... it requires pressing a button and then going down two menu layers before adjustment ... 3-4 seconds of "eyes-off-the-road" ... at 60 MPH = 264 to 352 feet traveled ... not a very safe design approach ... with "infotainment" not being much different in terms of driving distraction.
For me what has been great about the GX is that Toyota has resisted being "current" in terms of "cabin tech" where many car manufacturers have gone off the deep end. The fact that the GX is consistently rated top in terms of reliability IMHO for me over-rides any other peripheral criteria ... it's a transportation device as a priority, not a connectivity device.
If I want a big-a$$ LCD screen and seamless connectivity across multiple platforms for the foreseeable future, I can do that while sitting in front of my office computer versus being distracted while driving a 5,200 pound vehicle down the road playing with an LCD screen and interacting with connected devices.

I do think the heavy head unit integration in many current cars is going to dramatically shorten their usable life. Cost and availability of replacement electronics is going to mean mechanically fine vehicles get scrapped out. Think Porsche 928. I doubt there will be many C8 Corvettes driving around 50 years from now as there are early C3s driving around now: The explosion in use of one-off electronic components will do a lot of C8s in.
I wonder if manufacturers are having conversations about electronic component quality vs. making money doing repairs and selling more new cars.
