Default cruise control issue

Twice under a heavy load the cruise control stopped working (Which is quite an alarming feeling) also the revs were pushing up to 4000. Has anyone else experienced this?
I asked this the other day under towing but got no response

Did you fall 10MPH below the set speed?

If you're losing that kind of speed towing up a hill...you should probably manually hold a lower gear, and not be using cruise control. I'm don't tow frequently, but I know forcing your trans to hunt for gears increases heat in the trans a great deal, and should be avoided.
