Default Electrical Issues

I have a 2010 GX460 and have been having issues with it. Sometimes the head unit will die when I am sitting somewhere at idle or when I shift my GX into gear. Along with the head unit, the gauge cluster will flash random warning lights that will go away after a few seconds. Has anyone had a similar experience? I’ve checked the alternator and it seems to be outputting enough voltage to not have issues.

Have you checked your battery connections to ensure solid and clean connections?

Have you pulled any codes?

How long have you owned?

Vehicle history?

Battery connections are solid and the battery is only a few months old. I’ve only owned the vehicle for a few months and bought it from Carmax so it’s under warranty but I’m worried they are trying to give me the run-around on it until the warranty runs out. Looks like the previous owner may have had similar issues that weren’t fixed by replacing all of the fuses and changing the battery. Clean title and was a CPO car with the last owner, 117k miles when I got it. This has happened 20+ times in my 2 months of ownership and has only gotten worse as it’s begun to heat up. A shop in town is checking codes tomorrow so I’m in the dark on that until then.

The heat with the added electrical resistance is what’s making me think it’s the alternator but none of the tests ever show that it is faulty.

Is water intrusion due to a clogged moonroof drain tube a possibility?

I doubt it, it’s been in New Mexico since before the issues started for the last owner but it could be a possibility

Did the shop report back any codes?

Here's the update. They think that it is my brake pedal switch, which is supposedly broken but some of the symptoms add up so I am feeling hopeful.

Newest update, they replaced the brake pedal switch and the problems are reoccurring so we are back at square one.

I’m doing some stuff to my truck today so I will try it and see if it does anything. The only other symptom my head unit has been having is that the USB port doesn’t work but it’s not having tune or volume issues like a lot before they fail

FYI 2010-2013 use a hard drive in the head unit

The gauge cluster going wonky at times makes me think bigger issue than head unit

Do you know if garage has done a full vehicle Techstream health scan? This should show some codes even if false positives with power loss.

you could pull codes yourself with this

The garage gave me no codes or anything back but I just got a cable and tech stream software yesterday so I’ll be running diagnostics on my own as soon as I can. Will there be specific codes I am looking for? Or will it be random?

Unfortunately no specific codes... too many potential ones

Did you do the built in diagnostics listed here?

I did those a while back and all that I found was that the USB port was throwing a code but that was the only thing that ever popped up. The diagnostic mode doesn’t do that anymore though

Let’s see what your vehicle Techstream scan reports.
