We went with the GX as 95% of the time we are driving on pavement did check the 4 Runner and had it as a rental car for a week and really liked it as well, but the price difference made us go with GX.
If we lived in an area where there was way more dirt roads and off-road trails we might have picked the 4 Runner, or gotten an used 4 Runner for those needs.
End of the day get the one that fulfills your needs

This is a tough call. 4Runner retained value is incredible, so it makes sense to buy new rather than used, especially since the year 2021+ LED headlights are far superior to the old ones. Durability and reliability is probably equal between the two, and 4Runner is definitely the choice for hard core forest roads and offroad use.
On road, the 4Runner engine and transmission combination is less refined and powerful, and nearly as thirsty as the GX. GX seats I find are kind of flat, so we passed on getting one while I search for an acceptable LX570 or Land Cruiser, really difficult to find in the current market.
I have noticed that up until recently used GX in excellent condition only one or two model years old were priced equivalent to a well equipped 4Runner, but over the last year and a half or so GX resale values have really gone up, along with all other vehicles in this class as the supply issues continue.
If more than 25% of the time I would be hauling or driving on unpaved or offroad situations, I would go 4Runner for sure. Otherwise, given your desire to hold on to a vehicle for many years, the GX would probably be more satisfying in daily use, it is definitely better adapted to highway and street driving.

gx is better on road, ride, noise, power, general comfort. better off road too in most aspects. 4runner better with angles and clearance. even if you cant open the gx rear all the way with some trailers, you can most likely get into the back. if you use a basket carrier then you will only be able to use the rear window when the basket is loaded since they are closer than a trailer.

Tough call, had a 2018 4 runner TRD and now have a 2021 GX. I got lucky and made the swap before everything hit the fan.
I like the full time 4WD on the GX, the refinement, headroom, and interior. And 3rd row seat which we actually use sometimes.
I miss the 4runner just because I felt like it could go through anything and last forever. The GX can do this too. The interior on the TRD isn't so bad with the red stitching. The climate control is WAY easier to use - the GX is all menu driven. I had changed all the 4runner lights to HID/LED so the lighting problem is an easy fix.
I saw a lime green 4 runner today and it looked epic! Sounds like you are used to V8's so that might be a change. Can't go wrong with either, go with what you can find and good luck.
