Default Looking at the GX again

Hi all,

haven’t been in the GX forum since 2016 when I sold my 03 for a 13 RX. The RX was more for the wife and I was okay with it for the first year or so, but I can’t really say the RX does anything well. Not really comfortable or quiet or powerful and the hatch is limited.

seriously considering the GX again. Gas mileage is crap, but I’ve missed my GX since we sold it. The 03 lacked power and sucked gas like the current, but I loved everything else about it, except the useless tape deck.

I did have issues with leaking shocks and air springs on the old one, but the current gen with springs seems a bit jouncy.

Thinking of the lux package to get the leather seats again. Not sure about the vinyl and AZ sun.

The old tech in the GX is a bit annoying. I actually wish it didn’t have tech at all, but the locked down tech in the older ones is a concern. I basically have Bluetooth in the RX is all after most everything under the enform app disappeared.

we buy and keep our cars for the long haul, so thinking of the 22. Any reason I should just go with 21 and below outside of price?

Go with the 2022 for the new infotainment system with factory carplay / android auto.

Am I to assume this was a dumb question? Lexus didn’t take any worthwhile goodies away with the 22?

I’ll change the question a bit…Any reason not to get the luxury package? Anyone is super hot weather with Nulux who can report on how they feel in heat or how they hold up? I had The Napa leather in my GS, so I know how that one feels and holds up.

limitations with air springs where regular springs shine?

Up to you -I would look at Prem Plus vs Lux - maybe test drive both and see if difference in price is worth Leather, adjustable rear height (mostly of if benefit for towing heavy), and adjustable suspension. Or if you want to get crawl over DAC or any other packages only available to Lux. But if Nulux won't cut it then Lux is the only option.
See The Topher - owned a '12 GX and has reviewed a bunch of GX's, but of course is just one persons opinion.

My 2022 with nulixe looks new after 9k miles. My 2018 premium with leather has creases and a bit of flaking.

Great videos on his channel. Some well made points on the suspension differences too.

I’d love to hear more about the Nulux durability in hot weather. That may just be enough to sway me to the Premium Plus package.

Go with 22 GX. the apple CarPlay / android auto integration will keep the tech relevant for longer than the < 22 model years. Unless you plan to do serious wheeling and will need to change the suspension right away, seriously consider the luxury. The rear adjustable air is nice to have, even if you do not tow. It can be helpful on the occasional off road excursions. Plus the adjustable dampening on all four shocks is nice to have. And, I would prefer the Napa leather over the NeLux. Good luck with your search.

I did like the rear adjustable air on my 03. It definitely came in handy when we were loaded down with people and cargo. It’s when they went out I was hating life. Each air spring was $800 and $1700 for the adjustable shocks.

I kept the air springs, but replaced the shocks with Bilstien. I hated everything about the truck from that point. It just didn’t ride the same anymore. Super bouncy and just rough. The factory shocks were way better for that truck.

fast forward to now and I’m wondering if I should do that again with the Lux package. The leather seats in the 03 held up fantastically for the 13 years I owned it. The leather in my GS with luxury package were superb. It’s why I’m a bit on the fence.

It’s a small thing, but I really do like how the 22+ doesn’t have blanks for missing options. I mean, far lesser costing cars don’t look like you cheapened out with a bunch of dummy panels. Lexus should have done that long ago.

one of the things I despise about the RX and older Lexus cars are the locked down infotainment systems. I’d actually prefer to do my own like years past, but not possible with most modern cars. Having the systems locked down as they have been is just annoying. Losing things like Pandora and iHeart radio as options without giving something back was just obnoxious.

seems there are a few decent aftermarket options for upgrades for some years of GX. I had the Vais on my 03, but most of the new offerings all seem to be buggy. The tech in the 22+ kinda what brought me back to looking at the GX again.

Sometimes Toyota/Lexes will give something and take something away which is why I asked about the benefits of <20 models. Doesn’t seem like that’s the case with the GX.

We generally keep our cars a long time, so really looking for something I can live with long term.

Parts for AVS and RAHC suspension are cheap now.. even 3rd party options. The bags are like $100 or less for the 2 from 3rd party
