Default Is a performance brake upgrade on a 2010 GX460 worth it?

Hello All,

I need new pads and rotors, front and back, and am comfortable doing all of the work myself. I think this may be an opportune time to do a performance upgrade and have been looking at the Power Stop KC5874-3 (with the calipers), maybe the EBC S5KF1349/S3KR1132, or perhaps that insanely priced Wilwood kit. That said, I’m not sure of what serious difference I’m going to get from any of those. It’s a 2010 GX460, so I’m not going to be running any downhill slaloms on a track, but I would like a little better braking as this thing is a heavy beast. So are any of those brake upgrades worth it and why?

Things to consider:
  • I have a heavy foot
  • I occasionally pull a smallish sailboat or trailer <6,000lbs
  • I don’t mind spending a little more on things that are worth it
  • Only has 110k miles and I plan to keep it for another 5+ years at least
Thanks.

Trust me, the heavy duty Power Stops are phenomenal. I replaced my OEM stuff for this and couldn't of been happier. No fade, no brake dust and stops on a dime even over 70 mph. These are the best affordable brake kits for our rigs. FYI, I have a 2010 too with just a tick over 160k.

Thank you! That might be the push that I needed. Out of curiosity, why not the KC5874-36 that come with a calipers? I'm not a big fan of the red, but it seems like if you're going to put all the rest of the stuff on, you might as well do the calipers as well.

Personally I would stick with OEM calipers if they are not defective/leaking seal etc, of course if the calipers in the kit will increase the braking area/more pistons etc to increase braking performance significantly then it might be worth it.

Most important is fade free braking when driving in hills towing full capacity.

every aftermarket rotor ive used has warped shortly after, pretty much all aftermarket rotors use the same cheap chinese blanks that they then machine and coat to their spec.

just flushing the fluid often to avoid moisture buildup should be enough to stop any significant brake fade in the already beefy brake system in the gx.

So far under heavy braking and up and down steep grades hasn't caused any warping.

This was my logic as well.

My factory calipers were in very good condition so I didn't see the need at that time.

The price is absolutely insane.

What makes those Wilwoods $1,000+ more expensive? It looks like their caliper is a little larger, but the rotor looks the same as the RR or Power Stop.

RR needs options added (Pads/rotor selection/hoses/etc) - ends up about the same price when spec'd. Both are way too expensive IMO when the stock system is fairly capable. Bed the OEM brakes properly and I've never felt the need for more stopping power...
