Default UNI filter mod

I have a 2012 GX460. I just did a secondary air injection pump mod and installed a UNI, K&N type of external filter. My question is- how do you maintain this filter? Do you wash it from time to time? Do you oil it, like K&N? What has your experience been with a UNI filter, for those that did the mod.

Good question, I installed mine about 20k miles ago and haven't thought of it since. I imagine that it would be easier to just replace the filter when needed, but at what mileage?

It gets used for what, 30 seconds a day. Change it for peace of mind and its cheap. Just make sure to wrap it in plastic when washing the engine bay.

I don't think max air flow through this filter is a concern at all, I put the plastic cover back on over it and haven't given it a 2nd thought since. I wouldn't worry about it ever again, lol.

I put cover back on mine after the JLG campaign work and haven’t thought it about it for years now.

Hi

Heads up to anyone who has done the UNI filter mod on secondary air pump.

This is min after apron 2 years and 30k miles, the rubber is failing, I replaced the filter with another rUNI, but will monitor each oil change.

Rubber became brittle, most likely it does not like the heat in the engine bay.

I suspected this would be an issue. Makes me wonder about getting a small "ram air" tube pointing towards that to get some cooler airflow that direction to blow out the heat. Might prolong the rubber's lifespan.

I’ll have to check mine.

@tntcandy Did you run it without the stock cover over the uni?

That looks like the "clamp" was not properly aligned, and was aggressively over-tightened. Maybe a K&N would be a better option in terms of rubber durability ?

The clamp was aligned, I don't feel it was too tight, especially as it's a snug fit. I'll keep an eye on mine again every 10K or each oil change, not that hard to get too.

Yes cover installed, not sure if that could have had an effect on it, as it was clearly more brittle on the area closer to the cover.

Not trying to highlight the failure, but I do get a chuckle out of a mod that could've ended up making things worse. haha

Agree ... the OEM design works if maintenance is followed. Understand the motivation given the failure consequence, so more an argument for OEM replacement sooner than the service interval as an insurance policy ... cheap and easy ...

I do have to wonder if this a one-off since this mod has been out since 2016 and I can’t remember another report of this filter deteriorating this way.

https://www.clublexus.com/forums/gx-...ictions-6.html

The logic and design of this system on the 10-13 models is flawed and thus Lexus is basically keeping an open ended recall on this system for the life of the vehicle.

It does not run at shutdown so moisture buildup occurs in the valves and they will likely fail at some point if they were never replaced.. The original cap design also didn’t hold the foam in place securely enough as well.

Worm clamps are the worst and I've seen them chew up rubber hoses like that so fast. For something that small and does not see high pressures, an OEM spring clamp will work best because they allow for the rubber to expand and contract with heating/cooling, whereas worm clamps do not.
