GX460 V8 Passing Capabilities
I must say, I think the GX does pretty well when I need to pass someone at 55-80 mph.
I always down shift when doing this, as the GX isn't responsive with the gearing.
Highway speeds with the GX in auto is fine, unless you choose to be aggressive...I am aggressive and find that the simple left pull of the gear shift will propel me around cars. Depending on speed, such as 55-65 mph, it is necessary to shift to 3rd instead of the default 4th gear.
What are your thoughts or experiences?

I very much wish the GX had the same "ECT POWER" button that the LX570 and most other Lexus vehicles have. It totally changes the shift points of the car and makes it much more enjoyable to drive. My LS400 and 430 both have them. The GX fights to keep the car in the highest gear possible for as long as possible. Don't even talk to me about "sport mode", it does not compare.

When I first got the GX, I thought it was somewhat underpowered. After driving it around for awhile, I've changed my mind and think that it has plenty of power -- it's the way the transmission is geared/programmed that makes the truck feel underpowered. Manually shifting the transmission is necessary for maximum passing power and driving in the mountains.

Jeez, I almost needed to take a Dramamine to watch that video. I have been fairly pleased with the passing ability but I have not yet tried downshifting. Dude in Modified Chevy Silverado (SLDGHMR) license plate tried to snake me today to an exit ramp. All he saw was my shiny bumper. "Not today sir hammer!" When I looked back he was so flustered he almost side swiped a little sedan behind me.

Thanks BornDriver and QWKC6. \m/
Techman you should make a video of this technique for those not familiar. I could not find any on youtube....at least in a language I could understand that is. I want to make sure to do it correctly before I get too ambitious. Don't want to be in service again next month for a new transmission.

passing is ok, not great. This engline like most toyota engines are getting obsolete with no low end torque and they really need to add twin turbos like all others.
That video is quite dangerous and please dont drive like that. IF it had the pre collision system on it the vehicle would of stopped dead in the oncoming lane, not smart.
