Tuning the GX 460
Anyone out there tuning the GX 460? Surely it shouldn't be too difficult to get more power out of the 4.6L without sacrificing reliability or drivability. Seems like Lexus detunes the engine...

Simple answer posted above^
The only thing you can change is pedal response, with a add on box, but thats about it. No bolt ons, no ecu chips etc. What you get is what you see since the engine is basically EOL on the Lexus side (push for TT and electrification) and Toyota is got axed as well.
There are of course some folks out there who make Tundra 4.6 parts, that you can see if you desire a side hobby, but nothing plug and chug type.

In Eurasian markets the 4.6L in GX puts out 292 hp / 323 lb⋅ft versus our 301 hp / 329 lb⋅ft. Could this lower rating be assumption that one is generally using lower octane fuels in many other areas of the world? Not sure if that is true though so correct me if you have more info on worldwide fuel quality.
Just pulling this from Wikipedia but it shows the 1UR-FE when used in Middle Eastern GS & LS applications was rated for 347 HP / 339 lb⋅ft.
Is that all from tuning or different cams as well?

If I would mod the engine then I would prefer just ECU tune...Supercharger is different game play

ECU tune would probably be the easiest, a supercharger is $$$.

Saw this mentioned on Tundra forums. This guy travels around country and they do some of the tunes at meets and final cost is around $500.

"4.6L: Still under development, we do not offer a Reflash for the 4.6L yet due to the fact we have not tested enough of the 4.6L to offer a Reflash for them.
4.7L: Almost finished with development on the 4.7L we have to custom tune the 4.7L on the dyno, however we are very close to having enoguh testing done to offer a reflash for the 4.7L. So far average gains on the 4.7L have been 19HP peak gain, and 22HP low and mid range gain, we are not able to adjust the shift points on the 4.7L, but we are able to firm up the shifts and shorten them dramatically, as well we can remove torque management, and remove the governor.
5.7L Naturally Aspirated: Reflash is available as well as custom tuning. Average power gains have been 15-20HP peak gain, and 20-30 low and midrange power gain. We can remove the governor, change shift points for optimum power, remove torque management, along with some other custom request.
5.7L Supercharged, as we do offer a reflash for the 5.7L SC, we prefer to do each of these on the dyno to confirm safety and reliability. The 5.7L SC have proven to be a special creature, and have tons of potential, please inquire by email, phone, of Facebook about a tune for your SC beast.
Prices: 4.6L&4.7L custom tune on dyno: $500.00 limited time only(discount for R&D)

the gx engine is set for increased reliability more than increased instantaneous output.
reliability is relative to the time frame measured. You could add all kinds of HP and not impact reliability if you only are concerned with the next year. If you are thinking about reliability in a time frame of 10-25 years then you might think about ways to get less output from the vehicle. Driving like a granny, etc.
a few simple mods could increase HP without much reduction in expected life, but is the small increase worth the work or cost? And will it be sufficient, or will you want more. then more. and more.
a friends range has about 600hp. he knows it wont live long, so he trades them in every 2 yrs.

Direct Injection
The GX and LS both use the same 1UR-FE engine. However the LS version has Direct Injection giving it 389hp and the GX doesn't leaving it with 292hp (middle east models). I was wondering if the GX engine can be upgraded with DI or not. Anybody heard of this upgrade?

supposedly they've worked wanders with the Tacoma 3.5 and are invovled in the tacomaworld forum and are migrating into Tundra land...

different internals I assume to accommodate DI. However, if you require some serious power, I remember RF racing looking into a GX turbo or supercharger i believe.
