Default 2025 Hybrid Engine

Any word on which hybrid engine powertrain will be used on the GX 550? Last I heard was 2.4 liter turbocharged gas engine with 8 speed automatic transmission. Delivering 326hp, 465 lb-ft of torque and 27 mpg. I drive a lot, well over 20,000 miles per year. So I’m eyeing the hybrid in 2025. Or could it be a 437hp V6???

Lexus is being very tight-lipped about the hybrid but could be either. The new LC is going to use the 4 cyl setup which seems like they would do the same in the GX as it is basically the same vehicle. Caveat here is the Grand Highlander & TX are also the same but the TX has the 6 cyl hybrid to differentiate it from the GH, so they could do the same with the GX.

I would bet my left nut that the GX550 with the hybrid doesnt get 27 mpg. If it does, its likely only city. No way are they moving a 5500-6000 lb block down the freeway getting 27 mpg.

The TX plug in hybrid powertrain is only used in the TX and Century SUV. One would think that TMC would put this powertrain in more than 2 models (one of which is very exclusive) in order to recoup development costs. I think the LX700 and the GX hybrid will get this powertrain.

The L405 TD6 Range Rover can hit around 29-31 mpg on the highway. That thing is like a brick, too. I could see a hybrid 4 cyl getting around 27 mpg

They will not install that type of system in the GX. The GX needs to have a transfer case to maintain off-road capability. There are powertrain pictures from the global launch of the GX which clearly shows the 4 cyl turbo in a hybrid setup.

Yeah. A diesel. They thrive on the freeway and naturally get 30% better MPG than a gasser. I had a Jeep Liberty CRD with a tune that would get 34 mpg all freeway until I put 265/75R16 tires and a small lift on it and then it would only do ~26.

Look up the MPG ratings on most hybrids and you will see that they are often rated higher in city than they are on hwy. Thats because of the ability to regen and recuperate most of the energy you spent accelerating, something you don't benefit from driving at a continuous 65-70 mph. The GX hybrid will likely get whatever any normal 2.4L gas engine would get at freeway speed except it has to carry 600 lbs of battery and electric motor with it.

Default ES hybrid mpg

I own a 2023 ES300h. I’ve been averaging 42.6 for 13 months. Where I take a beating on mpg is on uphill drives. When I drove from Huntington Beach to Albuquerque, going through the mountains was my worst performance. For sure, city driving is the best fuel economy.

Default Hybrid engine - towing spec

Sorry if this has been asked and answered, new to the forum. If Toyota goes with the 4-cylinder turbo hybrid I'm fine with that. My primary concern would be that it will compromise the towing capacity and overall horsepower and torque. Any thoughts on whether Lexus can tune the engine to avoid reduced capacity?

It won't have the same tow rating as the V6TT... it might if it was the V6TT hybrid motor though which is a no go. I'm betting 6500 lbs for the hybrid turbo 4 motor.

Thanks Slprciv. I've had a deposit placed since October and was planning to wait for the hybrid but if the towing drops below 7500 I'd rather have the V6. I assume you would just switch to the V6?

Yeah I'm happy with the V6TT and the mileage, it is shaped like a brick so I accept it

I don't understand why wouldn't do the same thing they do in the Tundra Limited/TRDPro with the v35a-fts and hybrid motor, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_Tundra#XK70. Mileage on the TRDPro seems to be 18/21/24 (city/combined/highway) https://www.edmunds.com/toyota/tundra/2023/mpg/ and that's with likely bigger tires and a more off-road stance. I'd be ok with those numbers, although more is alway preferred.

I think you can compare the tow capacity to the Toyota Land Cruiser hybrid which is 6,000 lbs.

The hybrid option will delete the 3rd row in order to make room for the batteries. For most people, that will be a deal braker.
