That said, on this TTV6 there will likely be a more noticeable difference in performance with premium fuel than the 4.6L V8. F150’s with the 3.5L ecoboost can pick up 30-35 wheel horsepower on 93 vs 87. They are perfectly content running 87 but the PCM with increase both boost and ignition timing when it detects higher octane.
Any data to support this claim (increase in HP) on the 3.5 EB in the F150??

Yes, multiple tuners dyno testing the trucks on the stock tune with both octanes. Also, I have HPTuners and tune my own truck and can see the tables that allow for more boost. the PCM will globally add about 6* of timing on 93 vs 87 octane.

These twin turbo v6’s run such a high compression ratio with boost that they can take advantage of a lot of octane. I tow with my Ecoboost and have used Boostane to bump my fuel to 96 octane and even that didn’t max out the ignition timing.

Update to my previous post. One of the releases from Lexus giving basic specs shows fuel type of premium 'recommended', yet online user manual stating required with the standard verbiage if not used damage to engine may occur. Wonder which is actually correct as Lexus seems to be contradicting itself.

@FastTurtle I had reached out to them based on what I read online. I generically asked about timing and was then informed of the production delay pushed to Feb. So arrival in April / May

Just pointing out two different statements provided by Lexus regarding fuel. If premium is required, then it's required, if it is only recommended, and one can live with the (possibly) decreased power, regular becomes an option.

Default Gx550/460 atrac

Hello all...

before the GX550 gets an unwarranted "bad reputation" for ATRAC I tought I'd share a video on common ATRAC misconceptions and user error. This applies the the GX550 which will engage ATRAC in 4low and/or in certain MTS modes:

I saw a GX 550 on the road yesterday. Had the ‘Texas Manufacturer’ plates on it. White, Premium package I think. I thought it looked really good, and something that caught my attention was the ground clearance. Definitely more than the wife’s GX460. Looking forward to seeing more in person.

By that I mean it looks to me, at least on paper, that a stock 2010-2013 GX is likely to perform about as well as the GX550, including the Overtrail, in most normal off road situations. The only real difference I can see is the larger tires and the camera tech. Hardly a massive return to engineering. The video creator has made numerous videos arguing that lockers are redundant to A-Trac - so, at least following that logic, the rear locker in the overtrail is moot. Even if it wasn't, there is nothing special about the J250 vs the J150 wrt locker - non NA markets offered the lockers in the J150. Until folks actually take them both out (maybe TFL will do that?), hard to see how the entire Off Road angle is anything much more than design and marketing. While the GX550 has better breakover angles it has worse approach and departure angles than the '10-'13 460 (I know that 14+ have worse, but it just shows that current angles are not a foundational engineering issue, but rather just a design decision). Overtrail has E-KDSS but tbd if that is anything more than maybe marginal improvement over the KDSS that is in 100% of the 460's.

Instead the engineering resources look like they were focused on significantly improving the GX's ability to tow/haul things and people. And for sure they did. There is more cargo capacity and up to 1.5K lbs more towing, brake controllers etc.

A locker is a lot better than ATRAC despite ATRAC being pretty good. But those can be added so easily via the aftermarket. Nothing to get too jazzed about.

If you can save 50 cents per gallon without hurting any components, I don't see any harm in asking about regular fuel options.

I am in a market to buy GX550 in next 12 months to replace my 2012 MB S550 with 65k miles. I love my MB but am getting tired of dealers trying to do too much unnecessary preventative repair work on each visit. Do any of you know great Lexus dealers that offers the best deals?
