I am not crazy about some of what I see in the design but I don't quite understand some of the negativity. We have continually had problems here with Lexus as most of us are enthusiasts and Lexus isn't necessarily enthusiast oriented. From what I can see the HS is aimed at the Lexus customer, and his checkbook, as a higher mileage vehicle that is still a Lexus. The early artists misconceptions were of a Prius with a squarer back and I think Lexus did the right thing by not appearing in any way as a rebadged Prius.
And I also think they didn't need to achieve Prius mileage. Having more comfort with a larger gas engine makes a lot of sense. So they didn't hit one out of the ballpark but it may be exactly what their customer profile says the market wants. I think there are an awful lot of Prius owners who are step up candidates. OK, it doesn't get Prius mileage but there are going to be folks with a few more bucks who want the better performance and Lexus attributes. That's probably going to be all it needs.
There are things about it that I am not crazy about, at least from what you can tell in the pictures. But I am very interested in giving the thing a whirl when it is actually here. Not to jack the thread but I think the US auto makers should look at this market for people who want better mileage and maybe a smaller car but who have the bucks to not need to drag every last mpg out of the thing and want Lexus like comfort. Might be a good niche to explore.

I am not feeling the styling of this car one bit. It looks like a nice Corolla. Lexus designers are getting too conservative and need to push their design skills much further.
The new Prius is a pretty attractive car for what it is. I was expecting something more from Lexus. I don't know who would want to pick this car over a Prius just because it's a Lexus.
