is it me or do the brakes feel very inadequate ?

Slightly OT --
Is it normal for the brake pedal to make a raspy squeak when sharply pressed or quickly released? It sounds like air escaping from the pedal area. I assume it's just a pressure release for what appears to be a pneumatic system charged by an electric air compressor, but want to see if others have the same experience.

When I first test drove the car I thought I had to push exceptionally hard on the brakes in order to get the car to stop/slow down. However once I picked up my car, which I believe was the same one I test drove as they held it until I could sign papers over the weekend and didn't let anyone else drive it (or anyone before me since they specifically put the fix on it so I could drive it), I noticed they were fine. Brakes in every car are different from one another and take a bit of getting used to but honestly I think they are quite adequate and then some. Granted they won't be setting any records for stopping distance but just today I was on the highway and I had to slam my brakes and I had no problem slowing down quickly.
