Default 20000 mile maintenance

My car finally hit the 20,000 mile mark so it was time to change the oil. 10,000 was free at the dealership. Changing the oil is much easier on the HS than other Lexus cars. I had a RX and a GS with the filter only and they are more a pain in the butt. The HS uses the old canisters which are just a bit easier to change out. My only problem was that the dealer put on the old filter with the jaws of life so I have a oil canister cup to remove an old filter but it stripped the canister since it was on so hard. Had to go down to the store and bought one of those oil canister vise grips to tear off the old filter. The HS has a shield that has to be moved to get to the filter but you remove one push pin and you just bend it back, there's a crease to bend the plastic back.

So for the 20,000 mile I did:
Purolator PureOne Oil Filter PL14477 $5.76 - 3.00 rebate = $2.76 amazon
Mobil 0W-20 Synthetic 5Q $28 walmart
Tire Rotation $0 free at discountire/american's tire co, even for OEM tires you didn't buy from there.
Cabin filter, WIX Carbon filter $12.71 amazon

About $44 total, probably would of cost at least $100 or more at the dealership.
Time spent was at least an hour though because of the time spent getting the old filter off and driving to the store to get the vise grip. But I do enjoy working on my car and knowing that the job was done right.

Mistakes I made:
I added 4.5Q of oil as stated in the manual and was not thinking straight, now that these cars need an oil change every 10K not 5K, I do oil changes about once a year and I was rusty. So 4.5Q was way too much oil. Once the car warmed up, it was over the full line, luckily I do own a Pelz Oil extractor and took out a good 0.5Q through the dipstick tube. The oil line now is about 2-3mm below the full line when warmed up, which is perfect amount. Overfilling engine oil in a car will actually decrease fuel economy. On a side note, at the 10K oil change the dealer overfilled the car too and I had to remove some oil then too.

Great write-up !!

Did the cabin filter actually need changed at 20,000 miles?

And, you checked the oil level when warmed, what was the level when cold ? That's when I always have checked my engine oil level. I only have checked the tranny fluid in my cars when warm.

The cabin filter needs changing every 10,000 miles. It's gets pretty bad at 10K and especially if you buy aftermarket filters, you end up coming out ahead. The aftermarket filters also have the carbon in them to help with smell for what that's worth. The OEM lexus filters are pretty cheaply made too, nothing special about them.

At cold, at the full 4.5Q, it was right at the full line, maybe a hair over. But the proper way to check oil in general and according to the Lexus manual is to warm up the car and wait 5 mintues. When the car was warmed up, the oil was a good 3mm over the line. It makes sense, it's impossible to get all the oil out of an engine cause you have a lot of it sticking inside, so adding the 4.5Q capacity should make it go over. I'm always a believer in putting in enough oil for it to be 2-3mm below the full line. I'll probably add 4.25Q next time, it's easy to measure out and call it a day but that's probably in another year.
