Bought new 2023 ES300h in Nov '22. Will the city mileage really get into the 40 mpg range? Right now it's 38.1, driving in ECO mode. No jack rabbit starts and using easy acceleration. Does get better mileage that the ES350 (2016) that we traded in. It got about 21-22 mpg in the city (Las Vegas).

There are some here that will say not to use ECO mode. I do not use ECO mode.

My 10 year old 300h gets 38 mpg in Spring/summer/fall weather and 36 when temperatures drop to 20s.

scw189 how long are your typical trips in the city? Just a few minutes at a time or long periods of driving?

Is this your first hybrid? In my experience having owned nothing but V6 cars until my 300h I picked up last May, my driving wasn't exactly the most conservative. Some say getting that EPA rating is cake and just "drive like normal", but someone else's normal may be my slow or fast. I initially tried very hard to stay within the "eco bar" and the return on mpg was great. Over the 11.5k miles I've driven the car so far, my combined mpg is 42.6mpg. So not quite the 44mpg as stated, but I realize I don't have the lightest foot AND tend to average about 70mph on the highway (note: higher the speed, the more you'll see the mpg drop, especially on a hybrid vehicle). I also stay in normal driving mode as Eco didn't show any gain in mpg at all and the throttle response is horrid.

The best mpg I achieved in mix driving was 46.4mpg. So is it possible to get EPA MPG? You bet. You just have to drive more conservatively than what you may be used to. At least in my experience. Also don't forget all the other factors including; tire pressure, time of year, quality of gas, cargo weight, wind speed/direction, incline/decline of road, road conditions, etc. because all of that affects your mpg.

I use ECO mode as well. During the summer months with summer fuel, I get between 41 and 44. Best tank was a little over 47. Right now I’m running about 37 with winter fuel and short trips in temps between 20 and 40 f.

ECO mode benefits more fire stop and go city driving than other types of driving. There are tips you can search for in this forum on driving techniques to maximize your mileage. But if you just ignore those and drive normally and not aggressively, you should easily be able to achieve mileage in the low 40s. As others have stated, it depends on many factors, from seasonal fuel changes to temps and the type of commute as well as your driving style. The EPA ratings are developed under the most ideal of all these conditions of course so it isn’t always easy to meet them.

I am very happy with the mileage that I am getting. It is similar during the winter and summer.
I can maximise that by driving pulse and glide but that is boring and not good for other drivers.

Does anyone know what is the mileage span that the mpg is calculated upon? I'm sure it must be a moving average. But is it over the last 1000 miles, last 200 miles or the last fillup or what?

Almost all stop and go residential type driving for shopping/doctors/etc. Hardly any freeway or highway driving. We're planning a trip to Calif in a few months. I expect the avg mpg will improve significantly on a long trip in radar cruise mode.

If I am understanding your question, it is simply based on the last time you press and hold the center button to clear the display. It can continue running for as long as you allow it, or if you are like me you can clear it each time you fill the tank. It’s all up to you.

There are 2 averages. 1 called since reset which means since it was last reset manually and the other since last refuel.

In my experience, short trips reduce the mileage more than any other factor. I would say I get at least 6 MPG less on short trips when the system is cold. Extended city/highway combo driving is about 45 MPG on the 300h.

I purchased my '22 last October (2022). I was getting nearly 50 MPG before winter. Once it got cold and I switched to snow tires I'm getting 42-44 MPG.
