yikes.. that noise would drive me nuts, too.
question on the crankshaft seal oil drip.. Is the oil leak pretty evident when you look at the bottom timing cover in that area from under the car?
I see couple of drips on the floor overnight from my car. Nothing to be concerned about yet, but I want to know how to diagnose it, easily.
Probably can't do the repairs myself and need to take it to the dealer/shop.

I had to clean the oil pan a few times with brake cleaner to identify the source.
A few times I thought the pan seal was leaking. Eventually I saw the clean stream of oil from the timing cover. I'd estimate I spent an hour over the course of a few days isolating the leak. It didn't help the leak had been going on so long.

The popping noise is gone!!!!
I replaced the left wheel bearing and hub as an assembly. Nothing appeared wrong with the old assembly. I can only guess that the hub under a side load was shifting inside the bearing causing the pop.
Old hub.

Thanks for the documentation and photos. I recently bought an '08 RX400h, and although I understand the problem and what you did, I couldn't do it myself. Wish I could find a resourceful mechanic like you in my area! My son has done some work on cars and is an electrical engineer, so hopefully he could take a shot at something like this (?) So far, no problem with the hybrid battery, but I want to be prepared. I hope you are enjoying yours as much as I'm enjoying mine!
