350h downshifts (almost 4k RPM) when taking foot off Accelerator
#16
Once the battery is fully charged, and/or if regen current exceeds the maximum limit, the hybrid system will switch to engine braking to prevent the vehicle from overspeeding.
Personally, I love this feature. With our 2013 RX350, I always had to manually downshift on hills, and the cruise control would disengage when 3rd gear was selected.

350h RPM revs, extremely high after taking foot off Excelerator
I have had my 2023h back to the shop three times for this very issue.
Occurs at any speed, on any surfaces, in normal mode, both with proactive driving on or off. It does not matter whether there is a car around you or if I’m going 20 mph on a level back road without any cars around.
Sometimes it happens several times a day sometimes not for a week or two.
Very scary when it does happen as I am taking my foot off the accelerator and it continues to go up in RPMs even though the car is naturally slowing down. It only stops when I brake to a near stop. If I push on the gas and continue to speed up after experiencing the loud revving, and then take my foot off the gas again, it will continue until the car comes to a stop.
Usually once it occurs it is most likely going to happen again during the same ride. However, I can also go for days and it never happens. I travel the same route day after day.
All health checks are fine.
I have taken a service tech out many times, and it finally happened with them in the car. He had no explanation for it…. but he insisted that it is “probably” normal.
Revving at a high RPM after you take the foot off the gas does not seem like a normal function at all.

This very behaviour has been talked about many times. My 350h has this exact behavior as well. The hybrid system does this to draw down on a full battery. It happens every time the battery is full after a downhill travel or somehow the battery is charged up to full. Put the screen on the hybrid flow and see if the battery is full when that reving up happens.

It prevents the vehicle from overspeeding and prevents the battery from overcharging.

The battery can only handle so much current before it's damaged.

It is hard to explain. I have seen all modes so here you go
It revs up:
It revs up:
- To drain the battery when it is full. (WellsB is correct, you don't want a full battery or being charged when it is full).
- Even at a stop light, it sometimes revs up to drain the battery from full status.
- Does engine braking, reducing your speed on a downhill.

Also, the battery can only handle so much charging current, even if not fully charged. The higher the charge, the less charging current it can handle.
Lexus has a long warranty on the battery. There is a lot of management of the battery going on, to make it last that long.

Pole Position
If the system is working correctly, the battery never fully discharges or fully charges. it should be kept between the two.

I drive a 2021 Venza with the same 2.5L hybrid setup. (I have a 350h on order.) Unless, there is something different in the transmission setup? My Venza does not act the same as the Lexus. I would think that it would be a programming action that could fix this problem.

Does the Venza overshoot the cruise control setpoint when going downhill?
