Default 2WD RX400h Hybrid (not available in the states)

FYI. At yesterday's Lexus unveiling luncheon was the first time I saw the RX400h. To my surprise there was an 2WD only model that is not available in the states. The RX400h in the states are all part-time AWD. Very interesting.

The Toyota Highlander also comes in a 2wd model in the states.

How is that possible? All the RX400h's and the JDM Harrier Hybrids have the same powertrain.

They can simply delete the two rear electric motors if they want.

Just one electric motor would be removed. Two are required for the Hybrid to work. Here's the breakdown of the electric motors and their function in the 400h.

ELECTRIC MOTORS
Motor Generator 1 (MG1) - Function Generator, engine starter, transmission ratio control
Motor Generator 2 (MG2) - Function Drives front wheels, regeneration during braking
Motor Generator Rear (MGR) - Function Drives rear wheels, regeneration during braking

MG1 & MG2 are required for a FWD model of the RX. MGR could be removed.
