The only negative on CVT's have been that they can't handle high torque engines. The GS450h will likely have 330hp, and the LS600h will have an 8sp auto. Getting away from CVT's in these performance hybrids might make conventional transmissions nessasary.

CVT will be used in the GS450h..
as 1Sicklex reported months ago. I haven't seen a drivetrain layout yet but the autoshow site on Lexus.com is starting to reveal information about the GS450h at least. On the RX400h the power blends between the engine and electric motors at the CVT so you will hear revving of the engine but the power and acceleration are incremental so you don't perceive it like you do when manually shifting gears and feeling that sudden pull after each gear. The electric motors add torque in 10 second bursts and then the gas engine sustains it after that. The IS350's V6 is a powerful engine by itself so this will be analogous to going turbo or supercharging it. Its ideal use would be for passing German cars on the Autobahn.....just kidding.
