That color will probably have to be ordered initially.

Big new tax breaks for hybrid cars
Starting next year, buying a fuel-efficient vehicle will help keep IRS at bay.

January 2, 2006; Posted: 10:02 p.m. EST (0302 GMT)

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) - If you just bought a brand new fuel-efficient hybrid vehicle, sorry but you should have waited.

Starting Jan. 1, 2006, buyers of some hybrid vehicles can get a hefty tax credit. But the credits vary a lot and some very fuel-efficient vehicles still get no credits at all.

In some cases, though, the credits are large enough to almost entirely make up the additional cost of the hybrid vehicle as compared to a non-hybrid. That means any money you save on gas will actually go directly into your pocket.

Previously, some hybrid vehicle purchases have been eligible for tax deductions. The new credits, however, are subtracted directly from the money you owe the IRS. That makes these credits much more valuable than deductions.

Even though the new tax law covers diesels as well as hybrids, no diesel vehicles will get tax credits in spite of the fact that some get extremely high gas mileage, according to an analysis by the American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy.

The Internal Revenue Service has not officially said, yet, what the tax credits will be, but the ACEEE based its figures on what is currently known about 2006 vehicles and the wording of the law.

The amount of the credit for each vehicle is based on three factors:

First, how large is the vehicle? The amount of the credit is based on the vehicle's fuel economy as compared to a similar 2002 model-year vehicle. To get any credits at all, a vehicle must get at least 25 percent better fuel economy than a similar 2002 vehicle.

A vehicle could also get a smaller credit if it is estimated to save at least 1,200 gallons of fuel over its lifetime.

Vehicles also must meet certain emissions standards to qualify for a tax credit. Regardless of their fuel economy, no diesel vehicles currently meet the emissions requirement for a tax credit.

Default New info or not

New or old info, anyways;

GS 450h – The World’s first hybrid luxury sedan
The high-performance model of the GS range, the Lexus GS 450h is the world’s
first hybrid luxury sedan, and the first full hybrid vehicle to combine front engine
mounting with the rear wheel drive essential to sport driving dynamics.
On sale throughout Europe from early summer 2006, the GS 450h features a
3.5 litre V6 petrol engine coupled to a high-output, permanent magnet electric
motor. Combined power output is in excess of 250 kW/340 DIN hp
accelerating the new GS 450h seamlessly from 0-100kph in less than
6.0 seconds.
The new powertrain equips the GS 450h with performance characteristics
equivalent to conventional 4.5 litre V8 engined models with fuel consumption on
a par with that of a 4-cylinder 2.0 litre engined vehicle.
Proving to be substantially more frugal than comparable sports sedans, the
GS 450h is returning 7.9l/100km in the combined cycle; moreover, the new
Lexus returns CO2 emissions of just 186g/km, markedly less than rival, premium
sector sedans with similar engine power.

The GS 450h is more Porsche than you probably might like:

A member of the european LOC Lexus Owner Club community had the chance to open the trunk of a GS 450h......: Big batteries!

Only 280 Liter cargo space remain avaiable (european measurement method)

So if you plan (like i do) a 2 week vacation trip with your family - better send your samsonites with UPS or FedEx to your destination...;-)

Haha thanks, I knew they wouldn't have been able to find room for batteries elsewhere. And this is exactly why I said before Lexus won't build an IS hybrid. There simply will be too much sacrifice to usable space for batteries.

That said, on an unrelated news, rumor has it that Toyota is gonna put the Daihatsu HVS Concept (that little hybrid sports car) into production under Toyota's own name, in which case the car will probably have no usable storage space left at all but won't matter much since it's an unpractical car to begin with, unlike the IS/GS.

I think the IS has more usable trunk space than the GS ?

That's awesome. If the 2007 GS 450h had AWD, it would definately be my next car.

I got to sit in the 450h yesterday, very neat. Just one thing, where is the foot/handbrake? I couldn't find one.

I wonder why the 2007 LS 460 is the only Lexus with the sharkfin antenna here in the U.S.? In earlier photos the 2007 GS 450h also had a sharkfin antenna, but now it seems to have been taken off.
