If, while driving, you apply the brakes or shift into "B" mode on the transmission, the batteries will begin charging, sending the needle BELOW 0. It's not SPENDING electricity, it's CREATING electricity.

To start the IGNITION, you press the brake, then push the button.

Hybrid Lexus GS450h Offers Ministers Clean and Fast Luxury (UK)

V8 power with 2.0 liter consumption
Government ministers facing the dilemma of choosing between a diesel Jaguar XJ and a Toyota Prius may be glad to hear that Lexus will soon be releasing the world’s first hybrid luxury saloon, the Lexus GS 450h. The Lexus is faster and cleaner than the oil burning Jag.
On sale in the UK from May, the Lexus GS 450h will allow ministers to drive a much cleaner, more fuel efficient luxury car that still offers premium performance.
The Lexus GS 450h has performance characteristics equivalent to conventional 4.5-litre V8 engined models with fuel consumption on a par with that of a 4-cylinder 2.0-litre engined vehicle.
Proving to be substantially more frugal than comparable sports saloons, the GS 450h is returning 35.8mpg in the combined cycle; moreover, the new Lexus returns CO2 emissions of just 186g/km, markedly less than rival, premium sector saloons with similar engine power.
And ministers will not have to sacrifice performance with this cleaner vehicle. The GS 450h features a 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine coupled to a high-output, permanent magnet electric motor. Combined power output is in excess of 335bhp accelerating the new GS 450h seamlessly from 0-62mph in less than 6.0 seconds.
*Lexus GS 450h power figures yet to be officially confirmed

I guess we'll just have to wait & see . . . . . .

I guess we'll just have to wait & see . . . . . .
My "logic" now goes as follows:
1. IF the whole HSD thing adds about 400lbs to the GS350 like the RX400h does to the RX330, then the GS450h should weigh about 3,615lbs + 400lbs = 4,015lbs.
2. ASSUMING the GS350 reaches 60mph on its 2nd gear and each gear change takes 0.1 second, the GS450h will shave 0.1s off right there since it has no gear to shift when in CVT mode.
3. The Lexus magazine says 339hp for the GS450h so we'll go with this figure. The 0-60 time for the GS450h is thus (my 0-60 prediction for the GS350 - 0.1s) x (weight ratio of the GS450h to the GS350) / (horsepower ratio of the GS450h to the GS350) = (5.5s - 0.1s) x (4,015lbs / 3,615lbs) / (339hp / 306hp) =~ 5.41s
In other words, all the performance gain from the electric motors will be totally offset by the huge weight gain. The only reason the GS450h will be faster is because of the CVT.
Again, remember you heard the prediction here.
