Is my RX a CVT?
I just got a RX400h and I don't feel any gears changing, during a stop and go, I feel like I"m driving a very large golf cart with no gears.
Is this correct of is my car f@cked up?

I swear to God that I'm not making fun of you but how in the world did you go through the process of buying a $45,000+ SUV with a unique drive train without knowing that?

Good point...
I bought the RX400h for my father in law back in July, back then I had a BMW M6 so I could care less what the RX had since it wasn't going to be my car. All I cared about was Navi and Hybrid since the 400h was replacing the gas guzzling RX330 I had purchased for him the previous year.
Anyway, he totalled the RX about 3 weeks later. I got him another one in August since he said he liked it so much, plus it made sense...pretty light on gas, AWD for the winter months for us here, can haul my kids, and had Navi.
Well turns out that the RX was costing 30% more to insure than my M6 and our 07 Escallade and 06 650i which didn't make sense since the RX was by far the cheapest of them all. Turns out that my father in law being on our policy caused the increase of premium. So..... I replaced the RX for a Camry hybrid to make it easy on insurance. In terms of AWD functionality, well I'm finding that the RX400h is actually pretty bad in less than 1 inch of snow. The car doesn't seem to be a true AWD, no locking diff? The front and rears seem independent of each other and power doesn't seem to shift front to rear, left to right where needed and the traction control comes on and that's about it, not bad if you live in the southern states I guess.
I did not know about the CVT because I never bother looking at the window sticker and all I cared about at the time of purchase was getting a good deal and getting out of the dealership ASAP, not knowing I would end up driving the RX...needless to say, while great on gas, it doesnt drive well at all, handling is atrocious, and power while starting from a stop is pretty sluggish (I almost got hit making a left). No offense to anyone that owns a RX400h...cool concept but there were some major things sacrificed IMO. We'll end up getting rid of the RX if I don't take a "bath" on it, or just keep it as a family "community" car.
